A dangerous glint shed in Joseph’s eyes.
After witnessing so much, he realized only by fighting for things himself could he secure the best oue, especially when it came to women.
He would never allow them to defy him.
Judy was the perfect example, wasn’t she?
He had treated her so well, and yet she still dared to seek out another man.
Who could ever ept something like that?
Vanguard Group.
Lucas was working through a stack of documents when Desmond knocked and entered.
Gone was the gentle, considerate man from home; in the office, Lucas was like an ice–cold machine, unapproachable and forbidding.
Seeing him like this, Desmond couldn’t help but feel a pang of emotion.
He almost missed the Lucas who appeared in front of Aurora.
At least then he would speak kindly, even smile at the staff on asion.
But now, he was entirely different–like a stranger. Still, Desmond knew better than toment.
“Mr. Carter, everything you instructed has beenpleted,” he reported.
He added, “Daniel will be signing the contract with your wife soon. But the exact timing will depend on
her.”
“Alright, I understand,” Lucas replied without even lifting his head, his focus still buried in the papers
before him.
Desmond wisely held his tongue. He knew by now that nothing seemed to stir Lucas‘ interest.
Nothing–except matters concerning his wife.
Suddenly, Lucas spoke. “Did they mention when exactly the contract will be signed?”
He recalled how much Aurora had fretted over this matter.
If the matter could be settled quickly, then perhaps she would have fewer worries on her mind and
wouldn’t be so troubled as before.
Desmond thought back to what Daniel had said, then shook his head.
“Mr. Lewis only mentioned that the contract would be signed after the banquet. Isn’t the Walton family hosting one this week?”
“So I assume Miss Aurora ns to wait until that’s over before finalizing the contract. That way the project schedule won’t feel so rushed.”
Lucas set down his pen, his gaze locking on Desmond. The intensity of it sent a chill down his spine, leaving him confused.
“What banquet?”
Lucas‘ sudden question startled him.
Caught off guard, Desmond rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. “It’s the one Walton Corporation is hosting–to announce the end of their partnership with Hayes Enterprises. Beyond that, I don’t know
much.”
Lucas‘ expression turned colder, his eyes sharp with an edge that made Desmond even more uneasy.
Had he said something wrong?
Why did it seem that no matter what he said, Lucas was never satisfied?
But Lucas‘ mind was spinning for another reason–how was it that he hadn’t known about this banquet?
“When is it being held?” Lucas asked suddenly, his tone icy.
Desmond didn’t know. He only knew there would be a banquet. The rest was all secondhand information from Daniel–he was nothing more than a messenger and didn’t have the details.
Seeing this, Lucas said no more. He waved a hand, dismissing him.
Desmond didn’t linger, retreating to handle his own work.
Staring at the closed office door, Lucas sank into thought.
Why hadn’t Aurora mentioned this banquet to him?
