Chapter 495

    Following Lucas was no ident.

This was exactly whiat Wendy had been aiming for.

She wanted to see for herself what Aurora had been up to all night

She didn’t answer any calls and messages—what could she possibly be doing?

And now, even after all this time, there was still no sign of her.

On the drive over, Lucas found himself reconsidering whether bringing Wendy along had been a mistake.

What if Aurora saw her? Would it upset her?

After a few moments of hesitation, he pulled over to the side of the road.

    “You should get out.”

Wendy blinked, confused. “What? Lukey, we’re already halfway there, and you want to just dump me out?”

“Call a cab. Get back on your own. Get out now.”

His words stunned her. She had no idea what had suddenly changed.

How could someone shift so quickly, without warning?

“But we’re in the middle of nowhere,” she said, voice turning soft and wounded. “Where am I supposed to go?”

“I just want to check on Aurora. I’m not going there to cause drama. I won’t say anything out of line,” she added quickly, eyes wide with pleading innocence.

    Lucas hesitated again.

As much as he hated to admit it, she wasn’t wrong.

They really were out in the middle of the road, and it would be hard for her to find a ride.

And after all, she was Keh’s little sister.

Kicking her out like this didn’t sit entirely right.

He ran through the possibilities in his mind, weighing the oue.

Finally, he gave in. “Fine. You cane with me. But the second Aurora shows any difort, any at all, you leave. Immediately.”

“Of course. You can count on me, Lukey,” she said sweetly, clenching her fists even as she smiled.

    It didn’t matter.

As long as she couldy eyes on that bitch and see what kind of state she was in now, it was worth it.

She could swallow the difort, hold back the bitterness.

She could take whatever it took to win in the end.

A person with grand ambitions couldn’t afford to be tripped up by petty emotions.

Wendy took a deep breath, forcing herself to swallow the rising frustration.

She knew Lucas‘ temper all too well—if she pushed him even slightly, he wouldn’t hesitate to kick her out, right there on the

    road.

The only reason he was still being remotely civil to her was because of her brother.

If not for Keh, she would’ve been dumped out of the car long 0.

Now she shrank into the back seat like a quail, silent and small, no daring to make a sound.

She did her best to minimize her presence, hoping not to spark another outburst that would leave her stranded on the roadside.

The rest of the drive passed in tense, plete silence.

When they arrived at the hospital, Wendy trailed behind Lucas cautiously, barely daring to breathe too loudly.

She didn’t say a single word.

Lucas nced back at her, noting her subdued demeanor, and nodded to himself in approval.

Good. At least this way, he didn’t have to worry about upsetting Autora further.

He’d also brought food with him, nning to check on her properly.

But the moment he reached the ward, his expression cracked.

    Something wasn’t right.

Wendy, still walking with her head down, didn’t notice he’d stopped and ended up bumping straight into his broad back.

“Why did you stop?” she asked, rubbing her nose with a slight scowl.
