A maid passing by caught a glimpse of Mrs. Carlton’s unusually pale face beneath the coat, her eyes dull and lifeless, as if gravely ill.
Wesley rushed at breakneck speed to the hospital where Elijah was already waiting.
“Dr. Lin is ready.”
Wesley carried Cecilia upstairs.
Seeing Cecilia’s condition, Dr. Lin’s expression grew more serious.
“Has Mrs. Carlton suffered severe trauma?”
Her entire being suggested her heart had turned to ashes.
Wesley tightly pressed his lips, his entire body tense.
Elijah reported recent events in a hushed tone.
Dr. Lin nodded understandingly. “Since Mrs. Carlton is pregnant, medication isn’t advisable. She needspanionship to gradually resolve her emotional knots. Ideally from someone she trusts deeply.”
Wesley felt a lump in his throat. Someone she trusts deeply.
That could never be him.
Cecilia despised him–his presence was thest thing she wanted.
He refused to ept this oue.
“Is there truly no alternative?”

Dr. Lin paused thoughtfully. “This remains the optimal approach. Additionally, we must remain vignt: such conditions often escte into clinical Depression. At that stage, self–harm bes a serious concern.”
Wesley absorbed the words in heavy silence.
Depression?
Returning to Chaston Vi, Wesley kept constant vigil beside Cecilia. Yet no matter how he spoke to her, she remained unresponsive- vacantly staring ahead.
When he brought Gwendolyn over, Cecilia merely nced briefly before retreating into nkness.
Gwendolyn wept, “What’s wrong with Mommy?
Mommy, please don’t ignore me.”
Wesley gentlyforted her before having the maid take her away.
Finally, he sat quietly beside Cecilia.
Utterly helpless.
About forty minutester, Luciano arrived.
Gwendolyn, worried about her mother, had called her brother.
He looked at Cecilia’s condition, his face darkening. “What happened?”
“Corrine died, and Ci was so heartbroken she can’t move on.”
Wesley said in a low, pained voice.
“Corrine died?”

Luciano was shocked. “What happened?”
Wesley shook his head without speaking.
Luciano softly called Cecilia’s name, but she didn’t respond.
Her whole body radiated numbness and despair.
“I’ll take her away.”
Luciano said without hesitation.
He tried to help Cecilia, but Wesley stopped him.
Wesley’s expression was grim.
He didn’t want to hand Cecilia over to Luciano.
“Wesley?”
Luciano frowned. “Look at Ci’s condition. Staying here won’t help her, and do you have a better idea?”
“Let her stay one more night. Tomorrow morning, I’ll see her off.”
Wesley felt like his heart was being sliced apart, but he had no choice.
He couldn’t just watch Cecilia wither away.
After hesitating a few seconds, Luciano agreed.
He first took Gwendolyn away.
The whole night, Wesley hardly slept. He wished time would freeze so Cecilia could stay by his side forever.
When dawn broke, he finally dozed off from exhaustion.

After napping about half an hour, he suddenly jolted awake.
Cecilia was gone. His arms felt empty.
“Ci.”
Wesley scrambled up from the bed, frantic.
His eyes finallynded on the bathroom.
Barefoot, he hurried over.
Pushing the door open, he stumbled, nearly falling, then rushed inside.
“Ci.”
Ceciliay on the floor, blood pooling from her left wrist.
She’d tried to kill herself.
By 8 a.m., Cecilia was out of the emergency room.
They’d gotten her there in time. She was out of danger.
Wesley stood in the stairwell, smoking for an hour.
He looked haggard, defeated, cigarette butts littering the floor around him.
Only when the doctor called to say Cecilia was stable did he move.
He pocketed his phone and headed to her room.
Johan was already in the hospital room, sitting in a wheelchair, still
weak.
“Was it… because of what happened with Corrine?”

Wesley didn’t answer, pain raw in his eyes.
“Take her back to the Johnson family.”
The words hit Wesley like a physical blow, a sharp pain tightening his chest.
He clenched his fist, fighting to control himself.
Better to leave Cecilia with Johan than with Luciano.
Johan’s voice was weak. “Alright.”
He knew about Corrine. He agreed with Wesley’s decision.
They both believed it was better to end it quickly.
None of them had expected Cecilia to care for Corrine so deeply.
Wesley took heavy steps to the hospital bed, trembling fingers brushing Cecilia’s cheek.
“Cecilia, you’re free now.”
