Shattered 267

    chapter267

After all, if it weren’t for Cecilia, his daughter Juniper would be Mrs. Carlton.

“Do you mean that Juniper should go to jail?”

    “She kidnapped my son.”

    The atmosphere was tense.

Cecilia is Gwendolyn’s guardian. She refused to settle, so Holden

could only choose one of two options.

Either let Juniper go to jail, or find evidence that Larissa incited Juniper.

Holden couldn’tmunicate with Cecilia. He looked at Wesley, “Our families have been friends for generations. You and Johan grew up together. Juniper is practically your half–sister. You can’t just stand by and watch her go to jail, can you?”

But Gwendolyn and Wesley have no blood rtion.

Wesley has no reason to protect her.

But Wesley was different from what he thought.

He was unusually cold, reminding Holden.

“Uncle Holden, this is the second time.”

Previously, Juniper did something she shouldn’t have, and Holden, who was abroad, brought her back.

“If Uncle Holden can’t teach his daughter properly, I don’t mind disciplining her for you.”

Holden was furious at his cold attitude.

Wesley, you know perfectly well that Juniper was deceived by Larissa.

Are you really going to protect Larissa and let my daughter go to prison?

Wesley shot a cold and sharp gaze at Larissa.

    Larissa ducked behind Tania.

Wesley turned back to Holden. “So Mr. Johnson, are you saying your daughter is innocent?”

“She participated in kidnapping and caused severe psychological trauma to that child. Do you really think you can brush all that off with a few words?”

Holden stood tongue–tied under Wesley’s aggressive questioning

Unable to counter Wesley, he then turned to Cecilia: “Your son wasn’t physically harmed through the whole ordeal. I canpensate you until you’re satisfied.”

“I heard your studio justunched. I’ll personally invest in it.”

    “No need.”

Cecilia didn’t need the investment, especially not from someone like

    Holden.

She didn’t like Holden. His daughter had messed up, yet he hadn’t apologized once. Instead, he tried to throw money at the problem.

    So high and mighty.

“I don’t need Mr. Holden’s investment. I told you, someone has to answer for this. Either your daughter goes to jail, or you prove Larissa put her up to it.”

    “Cecilia, don’t push your luck.”

    Tania couldn’t take it anymore.

Cecilia was forcing Holden to target Larissa.

And for his daughter, Holden might do anything to Larissa.

Cecilia almostughed. “You kidnapped my son, and you think I’m pushing my luck?”

“What, in your eyes, a child’s life means nothing? Or should I just back down because you say so?”

She wasn’t that daughter who’d let Tania bully her anymore.

Tania snapped bitterly: “However you look at it, you’re still Larissa’s sister–inw. We’re family.”

She had no choice but to y the family card with Cecilia.

But Cecilia and Wesley hadn’t remarried yet.

To Cecilia, Tania’s “sister–inw” sounded like a bad joke.

    “Family?”

She sneered at Tania. “How dare you say those words?”

Tania’s face turned pale, then flushed, then ashen–a vivid disy

“Cecilia, must you pin this on me?”

Larissa asked in a pleading tone.

Cecilia replied coolly detached: “I said it depends on Mr. Johnson.”

    “You…” Larissa momentarily lostposure.

Yet Wesley, her staunchest backer, remained silent throughout Cecilia’s remarks.

Holden red icily at Larissa. Evidence wasn’t beyond his reach, but Wesley’s stance eluded him.

Would Wesley side with Cecilia or shield Larissa, his sister…

    He couldn’t discern.

    The stalemate thickened.

    “Why is everyone gathered here?”

An unfamiliar woman’s voice cut through.

Cecilia turned to see an unknown middle–aged woman apanied by another around twenty–five.

Wesley’s brow lifted fractionally before smoothing.

    “Aunt.”

Cecilia instantly recognized the woman’s status.

This was Wesley’s aunt, Chu Yue.

Beside her stood her daughter, Chu Fangfei.

Chu Yue entered with regal elegance.

Chu Fangfei wore a beige pantsuit, radiating crisp professionalism.

Wesley walked up to Larissa and tenderly stroked her cheek,

“Such a beauty, crying till her eyes are swollen. How pitiful.”

For some reason, though the woman seemed exceptionally kind, Larissa fearfully hid behind Tania.

Halfway through the motion, she froze as if remembering something.

Wesley rubbed Larissa’s chin twice, beaming. “No greeting?”

Larissa snapped to attention, her face pale, murmuring softly:

    “Aunt.”

    Wesley withdrew her hand, satisfied.

She returned to Wesley’s side, her tone pleasant but words pointed:

“Our family hasn’t weed new members in over a decade. Having another sister now is a tremendous blessing. You must cherish her.”

It dawned on Cecilia standing nearby–this aunt was here to assert Larissa’s standing.

Any thought of greeting vanished instantly.

Yet Wesley took Cecilia’s hand. “Aunt, this is Cecilia. My wife.”

Wesley maintained her sunny smile, though her words grew less than

    warm:

    “I know. Your ex–wife.”

Cecilia’s lips twitched. No greeting came.

    She remained cold and detached.
