Shattered 223

    He was protecting Cecilia.

Larissa snapped. She jumped down from the hospital bed, bare feet hitting the icy floor.

“Johan, you and Corrine… you two…”

Johan had already grabbed Cecilia’s wrist, pulling her away.

Larissa’s heartbroken wails filled the hospital room.

As the door opened, Wesley brushed past them into the room.

He didn’t even nce at Cecilia.

Cecilia lowered her gaze, realizing his eyes held only Larissa.

Sure enough, Larissa’s voice, choked with grievance, rang out the next second, “Brother.”

In a daze, Cecilia was pulled aside by Johan.

Johan pressed his lips together, his expression unreadable.

Cecilia spread her hands innocently, “I asked. You insisted I tell.”

    This wasn’t her fault.

    “Leave Wesley now.”

    Johan spoke.

    Cecilia: ”

    She was stunned.

That wasn’t the question he should be asking.

“This is between him and me. Right now, I’m asking about Corrine. Where did you take her?”

    That was Cecilia’s only concern.

Johan’s hand twitched, then clenched abruptly.

He resumed his slouching posture, leaning half against the wall, eyebrows raised as he watched Cecilia.

    “That’s between her and me.”

The words were an indirect admission–he had hidden Corrine.

    “Johan.”

Cecilia clenched her fist, her face expressionless as she stared at him. “I don’t know what happened between you two, but I believe she’s innocent.”

“Or perhaps… some things weren’t her choice. You shouldn’t be too harsh on her.”

She had searched online about the Johnson family. Johan’s parents died in a car ident three years ago. Rumor had it, they’d been chasing after their runaway adopted daughter after an argument, which led to the crash.

Cecilia understood Johan’s hatred toward Corrine. But three years on, Corrine hadn’t fared well either.

When Cecilia found her, Corrine was walking down the middle of the road, ready to end her life. Later, she’d attempted suicide multiple

    times due to depression.

Having witnessed Corrine’s utter despair, Cecilia knew exactly how deep her pain ran.

Coming to Johan now, she only hoped he’d go easy on Corrine.

    Johan’s careless grin vanished.

He straightened slightly, sneering, “How do you know she’s innocent?”

“Because I saved her when she tried to kill herself.”

Cecilia believed no one would seek death without reason–unless utterly broken.

Johan’s tone turned cryptic. “Maybe she was faking it for you.”

“We didn’t even know each other then. Why would she fake it for me?”

What’s wrong with your logic? Cecilia couldn’t follow.

    Johan paused, speechless.

Staring at her face, he couldn’t/resist reaching out to ruffle Cecilia’s hair.

“I know where to draw the line.”

The sudden intimate gesture caught Cecilia off guard. She instantly reyed in her mind how she and Johan had met.

They were merely acquaintances, nowhere near close enough for head patting.

She stumbled two steps back in panic, putting distance between them.

Nearby, Larissa clutched her chest, trembling finger pointing at them

    “You… you two…”

Wesley steadied her, his gaze toward them cial

    Cecilia was speechless.

Having nothing to exin, she just asked Johan: “Get Corrine back here. I’ll have her exin to you.”

The priority now was confirming Corrine’s safety.

    Johan refused. “No.”

Cecilia retreated a step. “Then let me contact her. I need to verify she’s safe.”

    “Cecilia, stay out of this.”

Johan coldly threw out the words, striding toward Larissa.

He supported Larissa, forcibly escorting her back to the hospital room.

The hallway echoed with Larissa’s heartbroken sobs

Cecilia knew pressing further would be pointless.

She turned to Luciano. “Let’s go.”

Luciano nodded, and they stepped into the elevator.

Downstairs, Luciano went to fetch the car while Cecilia waited by the

    entrance.

As the car approached, someone yanked her backward just as she reached for the door handle.

His tone was icy and detached. “I’ll take you home.”

Cecilia gave him a cynical look. “Not staying with Larissa?”

Wesley tightened his grip on her wrist, voice dangerously low. “Cecilia, must you stir endless drama?”

    Endless drama?

The phrase echoed bitterly in Cecilia’s mind.

Was she the one creating drama?

He doubted her, used her of abandoning Larissa, yet med her for the turmoil.

    Who truly fueled this chaos…

Luciano had gotten out of the car. Out of respect for Wesley saving Gwendolyn, he kept his tone courteous.

“She was genuinely harassed tonight–fled into my private room for help. Check the surveince; find that drunk who bothered her.”

The evidence was there. It hinged on whether Wesley cared to look.

Cecilia’s heart had long turned to ice.

“Why bother exining to him? Everything wrong is my fault anyway.”

“I should have thrown myself at them so Ms. Wilburn could escape.”

“It’s all my fault she got hurt.”

    Wesley’s chest heaved with anger.

    Cecilia drawled, “Really? Not me?”
