Jessica tried tofort Anneliese instead. Her usual yful energy had already returned. “By
the
way, I forgot to ask–why did Mr. Fullbuster call you his fiancee? Don’t tell me you agreed to his contractual marriage suggestion?!”
Anneliese blinked, and the image of that light kiss he had left on her forehead suddenly shed in her mind. “No, no, it was just to fool Marcus, to make the act more convincing.”
Jessica looked regretful. “Well, then make sure to thank Mr. Fullbuster for me.”
Anneliese nodded. “You need to sleep now. Get some real rest.”
Jessica had gone a whole day and night without daring to close her eyes. The bloodshot streaks and dark circles around them made it painfully obvious. As soon as shey down and let her guard drop, she fell asleep almost instantly.
Anneliese stepped out of the room and pulled out her phone to send Jonathan a message of thanks. ‘Jess asked me to pass along her heartfelt gratitude.’
His reply came quickly. ‘And what about you?‘
Annelieseughed at the text and simply called him. “Of course I’m grateful too.”
“Where’s my thank–you gift then?” Jonathan had just finished showering. He sat casually on the living room sofa, towel in hand, drying his hair as he asked.
He knew she had gone to the watch shop, but since they had spent the whole evening together, he hadn’t seen her slip a watch into hiding anywhere. When they parted ways earlier, he had even hinted at it, but she had acted like she hadpletely forgotten. Now, giving her another chance to remember, surely she would hand it over, right?
“Huh? A gift? Is there something you want?”
Instead, what Jonathan got was her utterly clueless response. She clearly hadn’t prepared anything at all. Did that mean the men’s watch she bought wasn’t even meant for him? The thought alone soured his mood.
His voice dropped cold. “Forget it. I’ve got things to do. Bye.” And with that, he hung up,
Anneliese hadn’t even processed it before the call ended. Scratching at her hair, she realized he might actually be angry.
Was it something I said?

Phone in hand, she looked lost, a flicker of unease and dim confusion showing in her eyes even though she hadn’t noticed it herself.
Just then, her phone rang again. Surprised and relieved, she answered without even checking the number. “Was it because of what I said just now-”
But before she could finish, apletely unfamiliar woman’s voice snapped in her ear. “You’d better know what’s best for you! Mr. Fullbuster isn’t someone a woman like you can dream of having!”
“Huh?” Anneliese pulled the phone away to check the screen. It was an unknown number. Mr. Fullbuster? Are they talking about Jonathan?
Before she could ask, the caller hung up. Utterly baffling.
Frowning, she blocked the number. But just as she was about to shower, her phone rang again -another unfamiliar number.
With a sinking feeling, she picked up, only to hear another young woman’s venomous tone. “You shameless tramp! You already have a husband, and yet you still chase after men? Can’t live without one, can you?!”
“I don’t know if I can live without a man,” Anneliese shot back coolly, “but I do know that women like you–spitting poison out of jealousy and ignorance–must be seriously sick.” She hung up before the caller could respond and blocked her too.
But the calls kepting, one after another, all from strangers. Anneliese hung them up one by one, irritation mounting. It was obvious someone had deliberately leaked her number and stirred up gossip to paint her as a target.
Finally, she set her phone to block unknown numbers and was about to investigate when WhatsApp began pinging nonstop.
It was Nicole Horowitz, heiress of Horowitz Pharmaceuticals, flooding her with group chat screenshots.
‘Someone’s dragging your name through the mud in the socialites and rich wives‘ circles.
Nicole was one of the few heiresses in Oceaton who still treated Anneliese decently despite her ruined reputation. Since Nicole had always shed with Selina, she found Anneliese worth defending.
Truthfully, Nicole had hoped to watch Anneliese tear into Selina and reim her ce in the White family. But instead, Anneliese had cut ties with them for Zacharias‘ sake, even following him into a basement apartment to scrape by and start a business.

Nicole never respected Zacharias and thought Anneliese had lost her mind, so their contact remained minimal. They only exchanged a few words when they happened to meet at social functions.
