Jonathan parked the car, but when Anneliese hurried to open the door, she found it locked. Startled, she turned to him. “What’s wrong?”
He leaned back, calm as ever. “Tell me what identity should I use when I demand her release?”
–
Anneliese blinked, then quickly caught on. Jessica’s current identity was fake. On paper, she was still part of the Johnson Family. Marcus was her brother, and he had every excuse to take her away.
Without a solid reason and strong standing, even Jonathan couldn’t simply pull her out. He couldn’t exactly im she was a friend–of–a–friend and insist on meddling in someone else’s family business.
Bang!
A heavy crash echoed from the vi ahead.
Anneliese jolted, panic overtaking her reasoning. “Forget it, we’ll see once we’re in. As long as Jess gets out safe, nothing else matters.”
Jonathan unlocked the door, and they stepped out together.
Anneliese darted ahead, ringing the vi’s doorbell. It took a while before two guards in ck appeared, scowling. “What do you want? Leave now.”
“Is Jess inside? You’ve locked her up, haven’t you? Let me in! Or I’ll call the police!”
The guards sneered, clearly unfazed. Domestic matters like this weren’t something the police would touch. “Go ahead, call. See who cares. Now get lost.”
“How about me?” Jonathan’s low voice cut through the air.
He had just finished a call. Now he stepped beside Anneliese, his arm slipping naturally around her shoulders. His presence alone pressed down hard enough that both guards froze, faces shifting.
“Jonathan Fullbuster.” His lips curved into a cold line as he spoke his name, no titles needed. His name alone carried enough weight to shake them.
The guards‘ expressions changed instantly.
The Fullbuster heir was notorious in Halden, and in Oceaton, his name carried even more weight. The Johnson Family might be Baytree’s local tycoons, but here they were nothing. No one in their right mind would cross the Fullbuster heir.
One guard rushed to open the gate/while the other ran inside to report.
Jonathan reached out without hesitation and took Anneliese’s hand, leading her in.
They had barely stepped into the foyer when a tall man in a robe appeared. Gold–rimmed sses gave him a refined look, but the sharp, shadowed eyes behind them betrayed something far darker,
He smiled as he spoke, a predator in disguise “Mr. Fullbuster, what an unexpected honor. My humble home is truly graced by your presence His tone was warm and polite, but the words dripped with

He was none other than Marcus Johnson.

Anneliese’s eyes locked on his face, catching the redness on his right cheek and faint scratch marks along his neck. Her expression hardened as she ground out, “Where’s Jess? What have you done to her?”
She moved to charge inside, but Marcus flicked his gaze at the guards, and one stepped forward to block her path.
Marcus kept smiling. “Well, if it isn’t you. Anneliese. It’s been years, and you’ve grown. But you’ve forgotten your manners–shouldn’t you at least say hi?”
Revulsion rolled through her at the thought of what he had done to Jessica. Her fists clenched, chest rising and falling sharply. “Move.”
Her nerves were taut. With such a racket downstairs, Jessica should have heard. If she hadn’te running out, it could only mean she couldn’t move. God knew what Marcus had already done.
The guards stood firm, ignoring Anneliese’s demand.
Marcus‘ smile widened. “Anneliese, Jess isn’t well. She’s already asleep. Tomorrow, when she wakes, I’ll have her call you.”
Bullshit! Jess has been perfectly healthy these past few years. The only times she was ever near death were thanks to the Johnsons‘ abuse. The thought made Anneliese snap. She shoved the guard in front of her and tried to push through. “Get out of my way!”
One of them shoved back, and her heel slipped on the step. She lost her bnce and began to fall. But before she could cry out, a strong arm wrapped around her waist and pulled her upright. Shended firmly against Jonathan’s chest, and almost simultaneously, two sharp cries of pain echoed through the vi.
