Perhaps her words made him pause, because he stopped and replied coldly, “Really? Go on, then. Let’s hear it.”
Selina’s heart leapt. “Mr. Fullbuster, you probably don’t know… Anne and my brother–inw, Zacharias, were childhood sweethearts and had been in love for almost two decades. Anne loved him deeply. He was her first love.
“Back then, my parents thought he had nothing to offer and would only make Anne suffer, so they strongly opposed them being together. Anne was so determined that she even ran away from home to be with him, living in a basement and still content. He may have done wrong, but Anne is only angry right now. Especially now that he knows he was wrong.
“You may not know, but yesterday, he forced Coral Slenderidge to have an abortion just to win Anne back. It’s only a matter of time before they remarry. When that happens, you’ll be the one hurt…” Her eyes brimmed with feigned worry, as though she wanted to say more but held back.
“Are you done?”
Selina bit her lip before adding softly, “Anne and I have always shed. Everything I liked or cared about, she had to take away. It’s what I owe her, and I don’t mind. But I never thought she would approach you…”
Her gaze on Jonathan was full of apology mixed with admiration, but her intention was obvious. She wasn’t only confessing that he was the man she admired and truly cared for, she was also implying that Anneliese had only gotten close to him out of spite and revenge—that she was simply using him.
No man could tolerate being used like that, especially someone like Jonathan, who stood at the top, looking down on everyone else.
Selina waited, her heart racing with expectation. Jonathan was silent for a moment before finally speaking. “Do you eat a lot of garlic?”
“What?”
“Your breath stinks.” He frowned, took two steps back, and covered his nose.
Selina froze, instinctively raising her hand to cover her lips and breathing lightly into her palm. She smelled nothing. Then she remembered–she hadn’t eaten garlic, not only that day

but for the past month.
When she looked up again to exin, Jonathan had already walked off.
Unfortunately, several colleagues had been eavesdropping nearby, and Jonathan hadn’t spoken, quietly. So, when Selina nced around, she saw people suppressingughter, whispering, and quickly turning away when she met their eyes.
Her face drained, then flushed crimson, then turned pale again, tears nearly spilling over.
Back in his office, Jonathan sat down and said to Zion, “Check if Selina White’s hiring process waspliant.”
Department recruitment never reached his desk, so he hadn’t known she had joined AeroAir’s engineering division.
“Yes, sir,” Zion replied and left.
Meanwhile, Jonathan pulled out his phone and opened his chat with Anneliese.
At Astoria University, one of Anneliese’s sr drones had gone off course and disappeared. While she was tracking its route, a WhatsApp notification popped up from Jonathan.
It was an audio message. She tapped y instinctively, only to hear the familiar, grating voice of Selina.
“Mr. Fullbuster, you probably don’t know… Anne and my brother–in–<iw, Zacharias, were childhood sweethearts and had been in love…”
Anneliese froze, listening as Selina rattled on, iming she would go crawling back to Zacharias and even hinting that she had only gotten close to Jonathan out of revenge. Her grip tightened around the phone.
She immediately called him. The moment he picked up, she blurted out, angry and anxious, “Don’t believe a word she said. I didn’t!”
Jonathan stood and walked to the floor–to–ceiling window, the corner of his lips curving faintly. “Didn’t what? nning to remarry Zacharias, or deliberately getting close to me?” His tone was cool, pitched lower than usual, his eyes glinting with mischief.
Anneliese’s breathing grew heavy. “Neither, of course! You know that. I fought tooth and nail to

get that divorce and nearly put myself in danger just to get Rory Reyes‘ recording. Why would I ever go back to him?”
Jonathan mused, “Zacharias had Coral’s child aborted just to keep you. You really don’t feel anything at all?”
Anneliese had already heard that news, but it stirred nothing in her. She frowned and gave a short, derisiveugh.
