Mnie was both anxious and furious after hearing Anneliese’s final words. She was so worked up that tears were streaming down her blotchy face. Her knees went weak as she staggered unsteadily, utterly caught off guard.
Perseus hastily reached out to support her, saying, “Mom, calm down. Have you forgotten how she reacted when Dad said he’d give her shares tonight? She didn’t even hesitate for a second to sign her name on those papers. She’lle crawling back to us soon enough. Just you wait.”
Christopher immediately added his two cents, “What he said, Mom. She raised such a fuss earlier. I’m sure Zacharias won’t put up with her after that. She has nowhere else to go now that they’re fighting.
“Besides, she’s done this before. She’ll alwayse back crying to us after she runs away. And that Jonathan guy? Please. I’m sure he’s just treating her like some sort of pet. There’s no way he’ll actually support her.
“She didn’t even graduate high school. She has no degree, no connections, and most of all, no money. You should just give it a couple of days. She’lle running back to you when she realizes she’s basically homeless.
“You and Dad had better stop being the doormat when that happens!”
Although their words made sense, Mnie had a feeling that Anneliese meant what she said. It was no longer a mere tantrum.
It was the way Anneliese had looked at them earlier. Her eyes were so cold. It was as if she wasn’t speaking to family, but strangers.
She parted her lips to voice her thoughts when she suddenly recalled something. So, she snapped her head to Christopher and demanded, “What was the vi transfer about?”
Christopher frowned in confusion before saying, “Oh, it’s just a conversation we had back when she and Zacharias dropped by. She said she was going to sign a vi under your name as a surprise birthday present. So, she asked me to help her get her National Family Registry.”
The look on Timothy’s face turned solemn upon hearing Christopher’s words. The possible implications behind Anneliese’s actions were not lost on him as he questioned sharply, “Where is it now? Bring it here!”
Christopher bobbed his head.
However, a maid’s shrill scream stopped him in his tracks.

In the meantime, Jessica was already waiting for Anneliese in her car outside the White estate. s, Anneliese had barely taken a few steps toward the vehicle when Jessica called out anxiously, “Annie, something’s up with Miles. I think he got into a fight. I have to go.”
She nced at Jonathan and blurted anxiously, “Can you please send Annie home, Mr. Fullbuster?”
Jessica genuinely looked as though she was out of her mind with worry. As a result, Jonathan couldn’t tell whether she actually had an emergency or whether she was trying to y cupid.
Still, it didn’t matter what she was up to because there really was only one answer to her question.
He nodded slightly.
Before Anneliese could get a word in edgewise, Jessica was already gone to the wind in her purple Maserati. Soon, there was only a purple speck that was getting farther and farther away
from her.
Jonathan’s car was as spotless as always.
There were no lingering scents soaking up the leather–no weird perfumes or air fresheners. If she didn’t know any better, she would’ve thought that she was having a “new car smell” experience.
Still, Anneliese didn’t really care about that little detail. All she cared about was trying to squash her nausea down. She had been feeling left–footed the entire night, and her fever hadn’t gone down even the slightest.
Right now, she was feeling green in the gills, smell or no smell.
In the end, she ended up pressing her cheek against the cool window with a frown on her face, trying and failing to alleviate some of the car sickness. It didn’t take long for Jonathan to do something about her miserable state.
He reached for her, hisrge palm gently sliding behind her neck, holding it firmly.
His skin was cool to the touch, and Anneliese, who had a palm pped across her lips and her eyes closed in difort, couldn’t help but nuzzle against his palm. After a while, she

eventually opened her eyes.
:
“Come on. You’ll feel better if you lean on me. The ride back won’t feel as bumpy,” he murmured soothingly.

He didn’t even wait for Anneliese’s response before gently tugging her into his embrace.
Sure enough, she ended up nestled in his arms in a matter of seconds as he made sure to wrap an arm around her waist, holding her steady.
He felt as steady as a rock. To her surprise, his suggestion worked. She no longer felt like her stomach was seconds away from using bile as a projectile weapon..
Although her nose was clogged, she could still inhale slivers of his crisp scent due to their close proximity..
Fortunately, it wasn’t overpowering. Instead, it was rather soothing.
Anneliese’s muscles merely tensed for a brief moment before immediately rxing.
After all, they’d done more than just hug earlier. They’d exchanged oxygen underwater… and he’d also bathed her. There was absolutely no point in trying to keep her distance from him for the sake of propriety.
It was with that thought in mind that she eventually let her guard down and drifted off to slumbend..
She was so exhausted that she didn’t wake throughout her journey back to Maple Bay.
Jonathan noticed that and didn’t bother waking her when they arrived. Instead, he carried her out of the car, into the elevator, and brought her to his penthouse.
The family doctor was already waiting for them, and Anneliese was hooked up to an IV in no time at all.
Nevertheless, her eyes fluttered open before the first bag was even finished.
As her eyes regained their focus, she registered that she was staring at an unfamiliar ceiling. Her groggy mind couldn’t help but wonder just where she was.
The only light source she could see was a floormp in the corner. Its soft glow nketed the floor with warmth.
It was within this oddly safe cocoon that Anneliese remembered that she’d fallen asleep in Jonathan’s car. So, it didn’t take her long to deduce just where she was now.

She had just gotten her muscles to support her weight when she heard muffled voices beyond the door.
Soon, the door swung open with nary a sound. Her eyes turned to the figure standing in the doorway.
It was Jonathan in a loose cashmere sweater and linen pants, looking effortlessly tall and handsome.
Suddenly, she heard someone yawning.
