Zacharias felt the world copse into darkness, a sharp metallic tang rising in his throat that he struggled to swallow back.
And then–everything returned to him in a flood.
“So, you didn’t go to the hospital that day to apologize to my mom. You went to plot with her, to set me up for divorce? What a d*mn joke!”
Hisughter broke out, jagged and bitter, ced with mockery and despair.
Zacharias had always believed himself clever, untouchable. Yet he had been nothing more than a pawn.
They had deceived him, hidden everything from him, and stripped him of it all before he even realized what was happening.
What a pathetic joke.
Her secret lover. His mother. His sister. The very wife he thought cherished him most— together, they had carved him open, striking at his heart without mercy.
Abruptly, Zacharias‘ughter cut short. Fury overtook him, and he lunged forward, seizing Anneliese by the shoulders and jerking her upright.
“Anneliese ude! How dare you!”
His grip was crushing, his anger palpable. Anneliese winced at the pain, but her defiance did not falter. She narrowed her eyes, teeth clenched, and raised her chin.
Her face, flushed with fury, curved into a mocking smile–like a rose blooming with thorns.
“Why wouldn’t I dare? I told you I wanted a divorce–did you ever take me seriously? You betrayed me first, Zacharias. You betrayed us. And now you stand here pretending to be the victim? Ask yourself. A month ago, how much of your heart still belonged to me?”
Her words struck him like a de. The blood drained from his face, and his fingers ckened on her shoulders.
She shoved him away, stumbling back onto the bed, chest heaving with rage.
“If you’d ever truly cared, you wouldn’t have been blindsided by everything. You know who I am. You know I can’t abide lies. Yet you sided with Selina, helped her deceive me–you cheated

on me. And all the while, you were so certain I’d never walk away, that I couldn’t live without
you.
“Your arrogance, your confidence–they were all born from my love. And every ounce of it turned into a de that cut me apart! The moment I heard you allughing at me outside the office, the Anneliese who loved you ceased to exist!”
Zacharias stood frozen, sweat beading across his forehead. His pallor deepened, his chest hollowed with an unbearable emptiness.
Anneliese no longer loved him. Not even a shred. To her, their marriage had been nothing more than a cage. She had been sharpening her de for freedom all along.
And now, she had cast him aside like refuse, without the slightest hesitation.
His breath came ragged. He tore open the cor of his shirt, choking on the words that refused to leave his throat–pleas, excuses, desperate confessions.
But none of them escaped.
After what felt like an eternity, he spun on his heel and stormed out.
Because if he stayed even a moment longer, he feared he would lose control–he feared he would strangle Anneliese with his own hands.
Outside, Jessica pressed her ear against the door, straining to catch any sound from inside.
Before she could hear much, the door flew open, sending her stumbling forward. She nearly collided with Zacharias‘, but instead ofshing out as she expected, he brushed past her without a word, storming down the hall as though she didn’t exist.
Recovering quickly, Jessica shut the door behind her and hurried to Anneliese’s side, her face. etched with concern.
“Well? Did he agree?” she asked breathlessly.
To her surprise, Anneliese looked not only calm but faintly relieved, even pleased. She gave a firm nod. “He’s going tomorrow. And it’s all thanks to the video you managed to get tonight.”
Anneliese lifted her hand, and Jessica pped it in a triumphant high five, her eyes shining.
“Perfect! No wonder Zacharias looked like death warmed over when he left!”

“Shattered” didn’t evene close to describing him at that moment.
Jessica, however, felt no sympathy. In her mind, he deserved every bit of it.

“Oh, by the way,” she added with a sly grin, “do you know why Mr. Fullbuster showed up tonight?”
Anneliese shook her head. “Didn’t have a chance to ask.”
It puzzled her. She had never heard of Jonathan having any association with the White family. With his standing, if there were any connection, the Whites would boast about it endlessly.
Then, a memory surfaced–Selina once mentioned she had invited Jonathan. Suddenly, the pieces began to fit.
“Hold on,” Anneliese murmured. “Selina’s had a crush on someone for years. When she went abroad, she imed she was chasing after a pilot. Could that pilot have been Jonathan?”
The idea made too much sense.
A couple of years back, Jonathan had been stationed overseas at AeroAir’s branch office, only returning this year to take over at headquarters.
It lined up perfectly. Selina wasn’t the type to fall for just a pilot.
If it was Jonathan, everything added up. Being a pilot was only one facet of his aplished
resume.
Jessica snapped her fingers, pulling Anneliese closer.
“Selina must’ve pulled strings to secure the job offer from AeroAir. She’s absolutely chasing Jonathan. You didn’t see it, but I spotted her earlier, carrying a drink to his room herself. The way she was smiling–oh my, it gave me chills!”
