Chaos erupted, and no one paid Selina’s frantic excuses any attention.

Lenora and Melody had also rushed out. Lenora spotted Zacharias still floundering in the freezing pool and dragged Melody to the edge.

    “Zach, get out of there!”

“Pull him up now! If anything happens to my son, you Whites will pay for it!” Melody shouted in fury, her heart aching for her child.

Jessica immediately pointed straight at Selina. “Your son jumped in from the second floor to save her.”

The moment Melody heard that Zacharias had leapt from the terrace into the pool, her anger and worry sharpened further. She turned her re on Selina. No matter how fond she had been of the girl before, her gaze now was hard, seeing only trouble in her.

Selina waved her hands desperately. “No, Mrs. Shaw! I only wanted to apologize to Anne. I never thought she’d refuse to listen and get so worked up. She grabbed at me, and somehow we both fell together.

“Zacharias jumped to save her… Anne, yes–please, someone save Anne! Is she still in the water?” She cried out with frantic urgency, even turning as if she were about to throw herself back into the pool to rescue Anneliese.

Her panic looked real, her shivering body and disheveled hair only adding to the illusion. Some of the onlookers began to believe her story.

Mnie quickly pulled Selina into her arms, stopping her from jumping back in.

“Oh my God, what does this mean? Did the Whites‘ real daughter sink under?”

    “Save her, quickly!”

At Selina’s words, more cries rang out. Everyone’s eyes turned toward the water in dread.

Selina stood there, shivering and humiliated under all those stares, yet secretly she felt a rush of triumph. Zacharias had pulled her out first, leaving Anneliese behind. It was nothing like the arrogant boasts Anneliese had thrown at her over the phone. Selina felt as if she had just pped her across the face.

And if Anneliese really had sunk, being abandoned by her own husband, that pain would cut to

the bone. The longer she went without being saved, the greater the chance of pneumonia at best–or far worse.

But just as Selina indulged in that thought, a shout broke through the noise.

    “Look, over there!”

    “Someone’s bringing her out!”

    “Thank God!”

Selina’s head snapped up toward the direction everyone was pointing. Atst, she saw it: from the shadowed far side of the pool, a tall, manding man strode forward, carrying a woman wrapped tightly in a thick nket. An assistant trailed closely behind him.

That corner of the garden was dimly lit, and to reach them required circling a cobblestone path lined with hedges. Everyone’s attention had been on the water, so no one had noticed until now.

The moment they did, silence fell. The man’s aura pressed down on the crowd, suffocating in its weight.

As Jonathan stepped from the shadows, carrying Anneliese across the stone path, his face gradually revealed itself under the amber glow of the gardenmps. Sharp breaths hissed all around.

He was devastatingly handsome, his features finely cut and striking in the shifting light. His ck hair hung wet, slicked casually back, water dripping from the ends. Droplets traced over his pale, sculpted face, gleaming faintly, while his eyes glinted with a chilling sharpness that froze anyone who met them.

In his arms, the small figure of Anneliese was swaddled from head to toe in the nket, even her hair hidden. Only two fair arms clung tightly around his neck, a ruby bracelet dangling on her wrist, glimmering softly and slightly softening the ferocity that rolled off of him.

“Who is that? I don’t remember ever seeing him in Oceaton.”

“An actor, maybe? But he doesn’t carry himself like one.”

    Murmurs rippled through the guests.

Timothy and Mnie, as hosts, were equally baffled. They had no memory of inviting a man of such extraordinary presence and appearance.

No one noticed Selina standing there drenched, staring as if she had seen a ghost. Jonathan! It’s
