The bright morning light spilled through the window, finally scattering the absurd dream like
mist.
Her voice was cool. “That has nothing to do with me. You can call Slenderidge.”
She was about to hang up when Zacharias snatched the phone back. “Anneliese, if you don’te, I’ll call the police. I’ll have them investigate your lover!” His words came through clenched teeth, and when his injuries tugged at his face, he let out a hiss of pain.
The sound only lifted Anneliese’s spirits. Her tone turned light. “Go ahead, call the police. Perfect timing. I’ll bring along the recording Rory Reyes gave me and let them hear it too.”
“Is that a threat, Anneliese!” Zacharias‘ voice dropped to a chilling cold.
He had been beaten, yes, but he had exaggerated the injuries on purpose and checked himself into the hospital, convinced she would worry, that she woulde rushing over. Instead, she sounded delighted by his misery. Was the Anneliese who once cared for him in every detail, who put him above all else, really gone?
“So what if I’m threatening you? It’s not like you’ve never threatened me before.”
Her voice was dripping with sarcasm. Zacharias clenched his fist and took a steadying breath. “Anne, if you don’t want toe, fine, I won’t force you. But I’m telling you, that recording you have means nothing. It’s not real evidence. You can’t use it to pressure me. And don’t think I’ll agree to a divorce because of it either.
“Do you really think Jonathan is such a great man? With his status, do you honestly believe he’ll be serious about you? I heard he already has a childhood sweetheart lined up, a pilot with a solid family background. Old Mr. Fullbuster couldn’t be happier with her.
“You think Jonathan will give up someone like that to choose you–a divorced woman? Wake up!”
Anneliese’s good mood vanished under his constant nder. Her brow furrowed. “Zacharias, you’re the one who needs to wake up. Stop dragging other people into this! I want to divorce you for one reason only–because I finally see you clearly. You’re nothing but rotten to the core. I stopped loving you a long time ago.”
Those words–<i>I </i><i>stopped </i><i>loving </i><i>you</i>–were sharper than any de, piercing Zacharias‘ ears and sinking into his chest. His face turned ashen, his grip on the phone nearly slipping. His strength drained, and he slumped back against the hospital bed.

“I don’t believe you! After more than ten years together, how can you say you don’t love me anymore? Anne, what about the bracelet your grandmother left you? Tomorrow is your mother’s birthday. Come to the White estate, and I’ll give it back. Then we can sit down and talk, alright?”
His voice carried both pleading and persistence. Anneliese frowned in irritation, but the bracelet was something she needed to reim. The divorce cooling–off period also had just three days left. She wanted to settle everything at once.
“Fine.” She agreed, then hung up before he could say another word.
Zacharias stared at the silent phone, his head buzzing.
<i>“</i><i>I </i><i>don’t </i><i>love </i><i>you </i><i>anymore</i><i>.</i><i>” </i>
Her words echoed like a curse, pounding in his ears. He pressed his aching temples and slowly calmed himself. She had agreed toe to the White estate and talk the next day.
<i>She </i><i>must </i><i>have </i><i>said </i><i>that </i><i>out </i><i>of </i><i>anger</i><i>. </i><i>How </i><i>could </i><i>she </i><i>not </i><i>love </i><i>me</i><i>? </i><i>Loving me </i><i>is </i><i>her </i><i>instinct</i>. <i>She’s </i><i>always </i><i>been </i><i>a </i><i>part </i><i>of </i><i>me</i><i>, </i><i>like </i><i>a </i><i>bone </i><i>inside </i><i>my </i><i>body</i>, <i>inseparable</i>. <i>As </i><i>long </i><i>as </i><i>I </i><i>exin </i><i>things </i><i>and </i><i>give </i><i>her </i><i>everything </i><i>she </i><i>wants</i><i>, </i><i>she’ll </i><ie </i><i>back </i><i>to </i><i>me</i><i>. </i>
With that thought, Zacharias grew certain. Mnie’s birthday banquet would be critical, and he couldn’t afford a single misstep. He immediately dialed Selina.
At home, Selina was trying on gowns. After four years abroad, she nned to make a dazzling return at Mnie’s birthday banquet. She wanted everyone to see that even after years away, she was still the White family’s little princess.
She had spent days currying favor with Jonathan’s mother, who finally agreed to deliver an invitation to Jonathan on her behalf. His presence at the banquet would make Selina the of all Oceaton, the brightest jewel of the night.

When Zacharias‘ call came through, her eyes lit up. She answered quickly. “Zacharias, I’m trying on dresses right now. Want to video call and help me pick which jewelry looks best?”
His voice was hoarse. “Perfect. I’m calling to ask about jewelry. Anne’s bracelet should have been delivered by now, hasn’t it?”
