“Look at them–height, presence, family background–they really do look like a perfect match. Even their silhouettes walking side by side fit together. And they grew up together too.”
She had noticed Jonathan’s attitude earlier as well. Around India, he seemed unusually at ease, their interactions natural and familiar.
Jessica nced at her friend, who lookedpletely unbothered, even speaking with a light, easy tone. Jealousy clearly wasn’t in the picture.
Jessica pouted. “You and Zacharias grew up together too. Childhood ties often can’tpete with someone new who sweeps in out of nowhere. Otherwise, how else did Selina White manage to steal him away with her phony act?”
Anneliese shook her head. “That’s different. Zacharias was blind and foolish. Jonathan isn’t. Besides, India seems nice–nothing like Selina.”
Jessica fell silent. <i>Should </i><i>I </i><i>be </i><i>d </i><i>for </i><i>Jonathan</i><i>, </i><i>or </i><i>pity </i><i>him</i>?
At the same time, India was speaking to Jonathan about Anneliese. She didn’t mince words. “Do you like that girl?”
Jonathan’s lips curved faintly. “Got a problem with that?”
A sharp ache rose in India’s chest, her eyes stinging as she fought back the urge to cry. “Unbelievable. I never thought the almighty Fullbuster heir would be just like any other man- shallow, ordinary, drawn to something young and pretty!”
Jonathan raised a brow. “So, you agree she’s stunning? I think her eyes are the most beautiful. Don’t you?”
As he remembered the way her ears flushed pink at the slightest touch, he added, “Her ears are beautiful too.”
India’s jaw tightened. <i>God</i><i>, </i><i>how </i><i>did </i><i>I </i><i>ever </i><i>fall </i><i>for </i><i>this </i><i>b</i><i>*</i><i>stard</i>? <i>And </i><i>to </i><i>think </i>I <i>wasted </i><i>nearly </i><i>eight </i><i>years </i><i>chasing </i><i>him</i><i>! </i>
She shot him onest furious re before storming ahead, her back radiating anger.

Later that evening, Anneliese and Jessica had dinner together before picking up Meatloaf.
For the past two days, the dog had been staying at Miles‘ house. Feeling abandoned, Meatloaf had barely eaten. On the way back, Anneliese smothered it with hugs and kisses, but the dog remained sulky and aloof.
When they arrived at Maple Bay, she led him out of the cab and into theplex.
Downstairs, Jackie spotted her and quickly dialed Zacharias. “Mr. Shaw, I see Madam. She’s at Maple Bay.”
In Riveraton, Zacharias stood in the bustling street, his face grim as he barked into the phone. “Give her the phone. I want to speak to her!”
While leading Meatloaf inside, Anneliese spotted Jackie approaching, and the smile on her face vanished. She ignored him and headed straight for the door, but Jackie stepped in front of her. “Madam, Mr. Shaw wants to speak with you.”
He offered her the phone. She took it, only to immediately hang up and power it off. Tossing it back, she frowned. “Move.”
Jackie scrambled to catch the phone, quickly switching it back on before stepping in front of her again. He knew if he failed this simple task, Zacharias‘ wrath would be inevitable.
“Madam, Mr. Shaw is worried sick. I’ve been here for two days without sleep, just waiting for you. Even if you don’t appreciate it, you can’t be this cold.”
Anneliese let out a sharpugh, her lips curling. “Did I ever ask you to wait for me? If you don’t step aside right now, I’ll have Meatloaf bite you.”
The dog, who had been ignoring her all day, suddenly barked fiercely at Jackie, baring its teeth as though ready to obey.
But even then, Jackie didn’t budge. He simply held out the now–connected phone again. “Go ahead, let it bite me. As long as you’ll answer Mr. Shaw’s call.”
His face was haggard, exhaustion written across his features. Gone was the indifference and veiled disdain he used to show Anneliese.
“Anneliese ude!” Zacharias‘ deep voice thundered through the phone.
She couldn’t truly set her dog on Jackie, and calling building security would take too long. With a cold expression, she snatched the phone back and pressed it to her ear. “Say it.”
“Anneliese, you did this on purpose, didn’t you? Do you have any idea what I went through,

thinking you were missing, seeing that car drenched in blood? I nearly turned Riveraton upside down looking for you! And you… you just ran back to Oceaton! I-” His voice broke into harsh curses, thick with rage and panic, rough from strain.
Anneliese pulled the phone away slightly, her tone cutting as she interrupted. “Well, thank you so much for your concern. Anyone listening might actually believe Rory wasn’t acting under your orders.”
