Chapter 146 Inside the Car
“It’s fine. I’ll just wipe it off.”

The leather jacket kept the rain away, and somehow he looked unfairly good in it.
Anneliese thought back to the moment earlier when he walked toward her through the rain, holding an umbre. Her heart had stumbled so hard that she had snapped her gaze away.
“Okay, then.”
The air shifted, thick with silence. Beneath it lived something unspoken, a charge neither of them dared to name.
One of them brushed it away with ease, while the other tucked it close like a treasure to keep.
Jonathan drew a slow breath, shut his eyes, and cursed himself quietly.
He couldn’t believe it. Something was rising, and given that it was night outside, it was definitely not the sun.
The knot in his stomach loosened bit by bit before he risked another look at the woman beside him, wrapped in a nket.
“Did you get hurt anywhere?”
Anneliese turned at the sound of his voice. Her dark eyes glimmered softly, rain making them bright.
Her hand slipped from the nket and opened. In her palmy a sh drive. She spoke with a smile.
“No, I’m fine. And look, I even got what we came for. But really, it was because you showed up in time. If you hadn’t, I probably wouldn’t have made it out.”
Rory hadn’t nned to hurt her at first, but she had pushed him too far. Once he lost control, no one knew what he might have done.

The thought pressed on her chest, and she shuddered sharp with fear.

“By the way, how did you even know I was here? You showed up right when I needed you.”
Her eyes searched him, curious and intent.
“We tried calling you and Ms. Sweeting, but both phones were off. I figured something must have gone wrong.”
Jonathan’s reply was steady, almost detached.
Anneliese blinked. “And then? How did you track this ce down?”
Zion finally stepped in. He could not stand how Jonathan always skimmed over the hard work when it came to his own efforts.
When someone puts themselves on the line, people deserve to know.
Not to be thanked, but so they feel safe and seen. Trust needed that.
So, he jumped in quickly. “Let me exin. Ms. ude, you wouldn’t know this, but the moment Mr. Fullbuster thought something had happened to you, he told me to contact the cabpany.
“It was pouring, and not many cabs were running from the airport to the countryside. We managed to track down the driver who brought you here.
“He remembered you because you asked him to wait at the vige entrance. He sat there for half an hour before someone told him you weren’ting back because of the storm. He got angry and left, but it stuck with him.
“Once we heard that, we knew something was wrong. Mr. Fullbuster immediately sent people to Creekwater Vige to search for you.”
“I see…”
That was how Jonathan had managed to save Jessica and Monroe too.

“But then how did you know we were here, in this exact spot?”
Anneliese tilted her head, curiosity glowing bright.
Jonathan exhaled, and the corner of his mouth lifted.

“I figured Rory had betrayed you. The one tied to Rory was Zacharias. I checked the flight logs and saw Zachariasnded here from Oceaton three hours ago. That confirmed Rory had made a deal with him.
“Rory was desperate to leave the country for treatment. With that kind of money, he’d only get more reckless. I guessed he’d arrange the meeting close to the airport. Around here, this was the best spot. With the storm clearing the roads, it didn’t take long to find his car.”
He said it like it was simple, like piecing all of that together had cost him nothing.
But Anneliese knew better.
Tracking flights and cameras meant pulling strings, cashing in favors, calling in connections.
She looked at Jonathan and felt the weight of another debt she could never repay.
Yet her chest was warm, moved by something stirring restlessly inside her, like a seed cracking through frozen ground.
She parted her lips, ready to speak.
Jonathan was watching her, patient, waiting for her words.
And then-
Her body jolted forward with a sharp sneeze. Another followed, then another, spilling out one after the other.
So much for words of gratitude. Her sneezes came out first, and she couldn’t control them.

She turned away fast, hands covering her nose and mouth, while heat rushed down her face and neck.
Her mind spun.
He couldn’t possibly think she had done that on purpose. That was the thought that went through her head.
