“I usually get up at six, exercise for 40 minutes, and leave promptly at seven–thirty.” Jonathan looked at Anneliese as he spoke, detailing his schedule like he was filing a report.

She almost felt like she had taken over Zion’s job. Still, she couldn’t help but admire him- only a man like him could live with such discipline. If someone made her wake up at 6 a.m. to exercise, she’d rather hang herself on the spot.

“Then I’ll have breakfast ready by six–fifty and bring it up for you. Would that work?”

Coming to his ce at dawn just to cook still felt odd to her.

Jonathan seemed to understand her hesitation. He only nodded once. “That works.”

After dinner, Anneliese busied herself clearing the table, eager to make up for her earlier blunder, then excused herself and left.

Zacharias had been gone for several days, and the backlog of work kept him at uderias Tech untilte at night.

By the time he sank into the back seat of his car, he rubbed at his temples and pulled out his phone. The screen was quiet–no calls, no messages from Anneliese.

In the past, if he stayedte at the office, she always called. She reminded him to eat, warned him not to drink too much, told him to bring a jacket because the night air was chilly, and urged him to drive carefully.

Her voice had been incessant, her words endless. Many times, he had grown irritated, putting the phone on speaker and setting it aside, barely listening as she fussed, only giving the asional grunt of acknowledgment.

But now, the very voice and calls that once annoyed him were the ones he longed for most,

“Drive faster,” Zacharias ordered, snapping the phone shut and urging Jackie on.

He wanted to get home quickly, to see her sooner. He wondered if she was asleep–or if she had left the porch light on for him, like before.

    Screech!

    Jackie mmed on the brakes.

Zacharias‘ brows drew together, his voice cold. “What are you doing?”

    “Sir–it’s Coral,” Jackie said tightly.

Zacharias turned to look. Coral had appeared out of nowhere. Dressed in a thin dress, she stood at the intersection in the autumn chill, right in front of his car, locking eyes with him in stubborn defiance.

His frown deepened. He hated this kind of entanglement. “Ignore her. Drive.”

His handsome face remained frozen, betraying not the slightest ripple, as if there was no trace of affection left for her. He was certain Coral wouldn’t dare throw herself against the car.

    Jackie hesitated. “Sir…”

    “I said drive!” Zacharias snapped.

Jackie gritted his teeth and stepped on the gas.

The car surged forward, and Coral paled, panic shing across her face. She started to move aside but bit down hard, closing her eyes and refusing to budge, her pride and desperation chaining her in ce.

    Screech!

Jackie had no choice but to m the brakes. Even so, Coral’s body still crumpled, staggering before copsing to the ground.

He tightened his grip on the wheel, about to ask for instructions-

    “Coral!”

When he turned, the backseat was empty. Zacharias had already flung the door open and rushed out,

In the next moment, he was lifting Coral into his arms. Her knees and hands were scraped, her thin figure trembling in his hold.

“To the hospital!” His voice was low andmanding as he carried her back into the car.

Jackie recovered and swerved the car around, heading away from Sunrise Residence and straight toward the hospital.

In the backseat, Coral clung to Zacharias, arms locked around his waist as tears streaked down her face. “Zacharias, I knew you’d never truly abandon me. It hurts… am I going to die?”

    …

His brows were drawn tight. “Why didn’t you move? Were you trying to get yourself killed?”

“Yes, I’m stupid–stupid enough to love you. As long as you’ll turn back and look at me, I’ll do anything. What are a few injuriespared to that?”

Zacharias said nothing, only letting out a quiet sigh.

Coral pressed closer, murmuring, “It’s so warm in your arms. Honestly, if I could die here like this, I’d be happy.”

    “Faster!” Zacharias barked at Jackie.

Ignoring red lights, Jackie sped through the city until they reached the hospital in record time.

After the doctors examined her, they concluded Coral had only sustained minor cuts and bruises. Nothing serious. With a bit of bandaging, she was free to go home.
