He was no longer that poor young man in a crisp white tee who had carried nothing but pride, kindness, and quiet gentleness.
“There’s no misunderstanding.”
“But I think Mr. Shaw truly regrets what he’s done. If you divorce him now, doesn’t that just hand him over to those other women? Anne…”
Raven’s view echoed the fears and reasoning of many women when faced with a husband’s betrayal, but Anneliese had never thought that way. She shook her head with a small smile, cutting her off. “Raven, I know you’re busy; the kitchen can’t run without you. I won’t keep you.”
Truth was, she worried Zacharias mighte chasing after her. She had no desire to tangle with him any further. Being trapped in a rotten marriage like this drained her, no matter how hard she tried to act like it didn’t matter. The torment couldn’t be erased with a simple deration of indifference.
“All right then, Anne. If you ever feel down and want someone to talk to,e to me. I won’t tell Mr. Shaw,” Raven said softly, her expression conflicted as she squeezed Anneliese’s hand. Her palms were rough with calluses from years of cooking, but the warmth carried through.
Anneliese nodded, then got into the car and left.
Raven watched the car merge into traffic before turning back, only to run straight into Zacharias striding out. Mustering her courage, she spoke up, “Mr. Shaw, Anne is such a good woman. She’s followed you faithfully all these years, suffered so much beside
you.
“You should never have betrayed her! What do those women outside havepared to her? All they want is your wallet. A man like you, with such ability and power–how could you not
see that?”
Marek returned just in time to hear her and rushed over, yanking Raven aside. “How dare you speak to Mr. Shaw like that!”
She stumbled from his pull, nearly falling.
Marek bowed deeply to Zacharias in apology. “I apologize, Mr. Shaw. This woman’s gone mad -needs a good lesson. She’s just a silly woman who only knows how to cook. She’s clueless. Please, don’t be angry.”
Normally, being rebuked so directly by someone beneath him would have enraged Zacharias.

But hearing Raven’s words, a different thought crossed his mind. She wouldn’t have dared to say that unless Anneliese had sent her.
I knew it! Anneliese isn’t serious about the divorce at all. She’s just hurt, just wants to force me to bow my head.
His tense expression cased. “My feelings for Anne have never changed. We’ve just had a misunderstanding. Raven, help me talk to her, convince her.” With a brief nod, he turned and walked away.
“Look at the trouble you nearly caused! Be d Mr. Shaw didn’t hold it against you, or you’d see how I deal with you!” Marek shoved Raven, scolding.
“But Anne said Mr. Shaw cheated-” Raven tried.
“What business is that of yours? And besides, what powerful man doesn’t cheat? It’s nothing. As long as he doesn’t divorce her or abandon his wife, that’s a blessing for any woman. You women are just too dramatic!” Marek’s face showed nothing but disdain.
Raven opened her mouth, wanting to argue, but he had no patience for her. “Enough. Get back to the kitchen and cook. I’ve got important guests tonight, and you’ll do the dishes yourself. Not a single mistake, you hear?”
He pushed her back toward the kitchen. Raven was never good with words, but cooking had always been her true domain. She didn’t dare dy service, so she hurried back to the stoves.
Meanwhile, Anneliese returned to Astoria University. In the records room, she pulled out her phone and called Jessica. “Jess, help me find a reliable private investigator. I need to look into something.”
Since Zacharias clearly had no intention of cooperating with a divorce, Anneliese felt she had to make preparations on her own.
“Got it,” Jessica agreed without a single question.
Hanging up, Anneliese buried herself in her studies. This time, she slipped into focus even
faster than before.
She spent the entire afternoon reading through two CFD papers and sketching out a partial design for a drone. By the time her neck stiffened and her eyes blurred, she finally lifted her head to realize the sky outside had already turned dark.
Her stomach growled, reminding her she had forgotten something, and she smacked her

forehead.
Shoot! I forgot I’m Jonathan’s cook now! He’s not sitting at home hungry, is he?

With that, she rushed to pack up and ran out. On the way, she tried calling Jonathan twice. Both calls were declined.
Even through the phone, Anneliese could feel the storm of his
anger.
