She paused for a moment, then turned back to look at Jonathan.
“Can I ask for a birthday gift?”

Jonathan hadn’t gotten Anneliese a birthday gift. First, he had only just realized it was her birthday. Second, with the way things were between them now, even if he gave her something, she probably wouldn’t ept it.
He didn’t expect her to ask herself. A small smile tugged at his lips.
“Of course.”
He was curious what she would ask for.
Anneliese pointed at the ring box. “The Fullbuster Group should have its own charity foundation, right? Could you do me a favor and donate this ring to help elderly people who lost their only child?”
The channels she could reach on her own might not be reliable.
Donating the ring would help those elderly people and count as doing something good in her grandmother’s name. At least the ring would get put to use.
Jonathan looked at her.
“That’s all you want for your birthday?”
“Yes. Letting go of the past is the best gift I can give myself. If you help me make this wish happen, that’s also the best gift you could give me.”
Jonathan smiled. “Alright, but are you sure? No regrets?”
Anneliese didn’t hesitate. Her voice was steady.
“I won’t regret it.”
In Age, Selina saw a man’s shadow cross Anneliese’s screen and gasped.
“What happened?”

Zacharias heard the sound and quickly came into the dressing room.

Selina hurriedly ced her phone face down on the vanity and pressed a hand to her chest.
“Zach, I just saw a really scary video. Did I disturb you?”
Of course, she didn’t tell him she had been on a call with Anneliese and that there seemed to be a man with her.
If Zacharias knew, he’d probably leave right away.
She needed him to stay until after her birthday party. She wanted Anneliese to know that whatever Selina wanted–person or thing–Anneliese could never take it from her.
“As long as you’re okay,” Zacharias said, nodding.
He was about to leave, but Selina held his hand.
Zacharias turned back. She looked up at him, her eyes soft, and gently swung her arm.
The emerald bracelet on her wrist swayed with the movement. Its glossy green color made her pale skin look even fairer.
She touched it, her eyes full of memories, then looked at Zacharias.
“Zach, thank you for letting me wear this bracelet today. It’s Grandma’s keepsake, the family heirloom passed down to daughters.
“I know I’m not my parents‘ biological child, so it made sense that Grandma gave it to Anne back then. I’m not trying <i>to </i>take it from her. I just really miss Grandma.
“She wore this bracelet her whole life. It carries her warmth. Being able to wear it for even half a day is enough for me. Thank you for granting me this wish.”
Her face showed longing and sorrow, and tears slipped down her cheeks.
Zacharias raised his hand to wipe them, but he stopped halfway and curled his fingers back.
Selina quickly wiped them away herself and said lightly, “Don’tugh at me. I just miss
Grandma too much.”
Zacharias‘ lips curved. “I wouldn’t. Grandma is watching from above. She’d be touched to see how devoted you are. But Anne doesn’t know I lent you the bracelet. At the airport, remember
to take it off. She mustn’t see it.”

Back then, their grandma had given the bracelet to Anneliese. Out of jealousy, Selina had acted on impulse and hired a few people to scare Anneliese.
It happened right after she had just turned eighteen. She only wanted to scare Anneliese and maybe grab a few hundred dors.
She hadn’t expected things to go so far.
Still, the bracelet had caused it all.
If Anneliese found out Zacharias had lent it to Selina, she would be upset again.
Lately, Anneliese had been quick to anger, and Zacharias didn’t want to cause more trouble or make her upset.

“Don’t worry. I’ll make sure Anne never sees it,” he said.
Selina smiled and lowered her gaze to the bracelet.
Anneliese hadn’te along anyway, so she wouldn’t see it.
But as far as Selina knew, Anneliese didn’t have any close male friends.
