Jacques sneered. “What? You chasing her, too? Too bad. Your little stunt didn’t even get you a look.”

He threw the car in reverse, spun around, and sped off to chase her. He drove through two streets but never saw her again.
Anneliese finally reached Maple Bay, and then she remembered she needed to pick up Meatloaf. She called Jonathan.
Jonathan gave her ess to the top floor. When she arrived, she saw only one apartment.
She rang the bell. The door opened almost at once.
A man stood there, looking like he had just stepped out of the shower. He wore a long ck robe, the belt tied tight, the cor neat. Only a strip of shin and a lean ankle showed.
His damp hair stuck to his forehead, a few strands falling loose. His skin smelled fresh and clean, with a sharp edge of danger that made Anneliese freeze.
Her breath caught. “Where’s Meatloaf?”
He stepped aside.
“Come in.”
Anneliese stayed rooted. “I won’t <i>go </i>in. Just send Meatloaf out.”
She called into the apartment, but Meatloaf never answered.
