Chapter 640

“Have you ever just taken someone for yourself?” I asked, raising an eyebrow, not even noticing the jealousy in

    my own voice.

“No.” Edward replied without hesitation. “I never thought I had to chase after women–they always came to me on their own.”

    I gave a sarcasticugh.

Edward let out a helpless chuckle. “What? You don’t believe me?”

“Sure, I believe you,” I replied, my tone dripping with sarcasm. “You’re nevercking women, are you?”

“What I’mcking is an interesting woman–someone who can actually bring some light into my dull, empty life,” Edward replied with a smile.

“That’s just fireworks–here for a sh, then gone,” I couldn’t help but jab back.

“No, it’s like the moon up above–always there, never fading,” Edward came back, even smoother.

My heart was thundering in my chest, and I realized Edward’s heartbeat was racing just as wildly against my back.

It wasn’t just his heart pounding–honestly, something else was getting worked up too…

I didn’t even want to go there. If he keeps pressing up against me like this, I might just bail.

“It’s getting a little cold…” I blurted out, grasping for an

    1 cxcuse.

Edward urged Whirlwind back to the stable, then swung off the saddle in one smooth motion. Before I could even steady myself, he turned and reached up, catching me as I slid down, his arms steady and sure.

I really had no choice but to let him hold me. Edward pulled me close, holding me tight against his chest, like he couldn’t bear to let me go–and honestly, with my heart pounding like crazy, I almost didn’t want him to.

Whirlwind came right up, sniffing at my hair before nudging his big head against my shoulder, like he wanted to get cozy with me.

I nearly jumped out of my skin, my face turning ghostly pale, I gripped Edward’s cor tight. “Can you… can you make him go away? I… I’m scared.”

Edward couldn’t help butugh. “He’s just trying to get used to your scent. He’s harmless, really.”

í stood there, frozen, as Edward made a quick gesture for someone toe over.

A stable hand stepped out from behind the door and led Whirlwind back to his stall.

I watched that gorgeous horse walk away, totally mesmerized by how elegant and striking he looked with every step. No wonder he was Edward’s pride and joy.

“Are you still cold?” Edward asked, his gaze lingering on me while I was still distracted by the horse.

It was only then that I realized I was still gripping his cor, practically nestled right up against his chest.

I jumped back a step, awkwardly tucking my hair behind my ear, my ears burning so red I could feel the heat.

    “Is it gettingte?” I asked.

Edward nced at the time. “It’s almost midnight. Do you want to head back?”

I hesitated. “If I go back now, it might disturb ine.”

“Do you want to stay here and rest?” Edward asked, his voice low and husky.

“Is there somewhere I can stay here?” I asked.

Edward nodded. “Of course, I’ve got a private suite.”

The inky darkness of the night pressed in, leaving my thoughts in total chaos.

I bit my lip, a vague sense of guilt I couldn’t quite name creeping up on me.

“Alright, I’ll take a guest room. Thank you,” I murmured.

Edward led me upstairs, and the elevator whisked us up to the sixth floor. A gray door slid open, and he stepped inside.

Inside, the ce had vintage decor with an elegant English vibe.

Edward walked in and said to me, “You sleep in the master bedroom, I’ll take the guest room.”

I stood by the door, feeling all kinds of messed up, like I was barely keeping my rebellious heart in check.

I still couldn’t figure out how I even ended up here, or how things got soplicated between me and Edward.

    I must be crazy.

All of a sudden, I just wanted to run back home, settle into a boring nine–to–five, and use my dividends to invest in real estate. Seriously, what was wrong with making money the easy way? Why did I have toe all the way to the UK to study?

Of all ces, why did Edward have to be here too?

And why couldn’t Jared have figured things out sooner?

“What’s wrong?” Edward asked as he slipped off his coat, revealing a ck dress shirt underneath. The look gave him an even more refined, aristocratic kind of charm.

My gaze shamelessly roamed over his face, and after months of self–restraint, my whole body suddenly felt like it was burning up.

“It’s nothing. I’m just tired. I’m going to get some sleep,” I said, forcing myself to keep it together and not let things get any closer.

Edward opened the door to his bedroom and said, “This is my room.”

I hurried inside and tossed a quick, “Goodnight!” over my shoulder.

Then I closed the door behind me–if my self–control was about to break, I’d rather lock myself away first, making sure the beast inside me didn’t get a chance to run wild.

I didn’t bother with a shower–just washed my feet and walked barefoot across the plush carpet.

An indescribable sense of tenderness welled up inside me.

Just as I was about to pull back the covers and climb into bed, a knock sounded at the door. I jolted, my whole body shuddering at the sudden noise.

“I brought you some water,” Edward said, his deep, husky voice drifting in from the hallway.
