Our family was actually pretty well–off, and Aiden had just graduated, eager to prove himself. But even though he was ready to fight for his future, his girlfriend just didn’t have the patience to wait.
“Aiden, don’t be sad. Everyone wants different things in life. Just put an end to this rtionship–you’ll definitely find someone who’s a better fit for you in the future,” I said softly, trying tofort him.
“Sis, I’m fine, really. I’m packing up my stuff and moving out of that ce right now,” Aiden replied, but there was anger in his voice. I knew he wasn’t really fine–he’d loved her so much.
“Aiden, why don’t you move into my apartment? You can stay there for now,” I offered. I hardly evere to Braylin these days, so it’s just sitting empty anyway–you might as well use it.
“Sis… I feel so awful…” Hearing me care just made the pain cut even deeper for him, and Aiden started sobbing like a little kid.
My eyes filled with tears, but I forced myself to stay calm and told him to hang in there.
As soon as I hung up, Edward walked back in. Noticing my red eyes, he let out a soft sigh. “Your brother broke up with her?”
“Yeah,” I nodded.
“Maybe it’s for the best,” Edward said quietly. “I’ve already arranged for the bank to let her go.”
I froze, staring at him. “Do we have to pay a penalty for that?”
Edward chuckled. “She’s still on her probation period. She’s got a few days left.”
In that moment, it felt like fate was already pulling the strings.
Sophia thought she was finally making it, but she never saw thising–losing her job too.
“Alright, don’t be sad anymore. I’ll take you home,” Edward said gently.
I stood
up, but my vision suddenly blurred. I reached out and grabbed the wall to steady myself.
A strong hand reached out and grabbed my arm. Edward’s voice was soft as he asked, “Can you walk? Do you need me to carry you?”
I snapped back to reality, startled, “No, I can walk.”
Edward chuckled softly.
We
got back to my ce in Edward’s car. As I stepped out, I nced at him, biting my lip nervously. “Thanks for driving me home, Mr. Jennings.”
Edward’s eyes lingered on me, deep and unreadable. “Go on up. Call me if you need anything.”

I thought about Isabelle Lynn’s tricks. Now that I’d probably gotten her whole family involved—and with so much at stake–there was no telling what kind of danger might be waiting for me.
I quickly ran through my options, then shamelessly looked at Edward. “Mr. Jennings, would you like toe up for a while?”
Edward looked a little surprised, a hint of happiness shing across his handsome face. “Is that a real invitation?”
My eyes flickered, and I decided toe clean. “Honestly, I’m just worried the Lynn family might try something against me… So I was hoping you could watch my back.”
Edward let out a lowugh. “So that’s it, huh? Well, how about youe stay at my ce? The Lynn family wouldn’t dare mess with you there–you’ll be way safer with me than here.”
“But… what if I run into Ryan?” My nerves were shot, like I was tiptoeing on a wire, scared out of my mind.
Edward’s expression soured. “Seriously? He’s about to get married. Are you still saving yourself for him or something?”
I blushed, flustered and annoyed. “Of course not.”
Edward reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. “Let’s make sure you stay safe first. Come with me.”
“Where did you get the keyst time?” I asked him.
Edward replied honestly, “Ryan gave it to me. He thought you might be in trouble, so he had someone bring me the key and asked me to check on you.”
I blinked. “So Isabelle knew you came to see me, and she totally freaked out.”
Thinking about it, I suddenly burst outughing. “She schemed and plotted so much, and in the end, she just ended up sending you straight to me. That’s kind of sad for her.”
Edward watched me, frowning as I wasughing like I’d lost my mind. “Weren’t you hoping Ryan would show up? You look kind of let down.”
I shook my head. “I’m not waiting for anyone. Whoever saves me is my lifesaver, simple as that.”
Edward suddenly took a step closer, closing the distance between us. “Oh yeah? So does that make me your
hero now?”
I froze, my breath catching. I shot a quick nce at the driver’s seat. “Careful, the driver can see us.
I wanted to remind him that with someone else around, getting this close could look bad–rumors could spread, and that wouldn’t do him any favors.
Edward looked a little down as he stepped back. “So, are youing with me or not?”
