Yvonne put her hands on her hips and fired right back, “Grandma, you’re even fiercer than Mommy! You’re the real old tigress here!”
“Just look at this kid…” Sally waspletely torn–she didn’t know whether tough or blow up.
Just then, the waiter brought over the champagne. “Pack it up, I’m taking it to go,” I said.
The waiter hurried off to get it boxed up.
Yvonne held onto my finger as we left the restaurant. Once we were in the car, she asked, “Mommy, what’s a tiger mom?”
I smiled. “It just means a really fierce woman.”
“Isn’t it good for a woman to be fierce? I’m pretty fierce at school, and that way, nobody dares to pick on me.” Yvonne made a face.
As I drove, I said, “If you’re in the right, it’s fine to stand your ground. But if you’re not, you should talk things through first.”
Yvonne nodded, then looked at me with big, sad eyes. “Mommy, are you really going to Braylin? How long will you be gone? Are you noting back?”
“Worried I won’te back?” I asked, smiling.
“One of the kids in my ss had her mom leave the country after her parents got divorced, and she never came back. It’s so sad.” Yvonne’s eyes started to tear up. “Mommy, I don’t want to be a kid left behind.”
I reached over and gently patted her head. “Don’t worry, sweetie. I’lle back to see you whenever I can.”
“Okay, then I can ask Daddy to take me to see you when he has time off.” Yvonne was being so grown–up.
When we got back to the apartment, I tidied up a bit while Yvonne went to take a shower. By the time I finished mine, it was already after ten.
My phone dinged with a WeChat notification.
I nced at the screen–it was a message in that three–person group chat.
Nathan sent over a photo. It was my apartment, lights zing.
“Victoria, you’re back in Hachester?”
I pressed my lips together, smiling. Nathan really did care about me.
I messaged him back, “Yeah, just here for a couple of days. Are you still at work thiste?”

“Making money matters, but so does your health. Try to get some rest.” I knew that after we broke up, Nathan had really thrown himself into his work. Honestly, that was probably for the best.
Suddenly, Jared messaged, “I’m not dead yet, you know. Can you two not get all flirty while I’m still here?“.
Nathan fired back right away, “Mr. Hob, if you can’t stand it, why don’t you go drop dead for a while?”
Jared dropped a sword emoji in the chat.
Nathan fired back with a bunch of bomb emojis.
Watching these two bicker in my group chat, I cut in, “If you guys keep this up, I’m leaving the group.”
Nathan quickly sent over a gift. “Group leader’s love–grab it while it’s hot!”
Jared was faster than me–he snatched the gift and shot back, “Thanks, admin. You’re a saint.”
Nathan sent an angry emojì. “Spit it out!”
Jared instantly sent over a fat 9999 gift. “Victoria, here’s some interest on top. Go ahead and take it.”
I didn’t hold back I grabbed it and replied, “Thanks, I’ll use it to buy some snacks for your daughter.”
Nathan chimed in, “Well, if that’s the case, I should get some credit for those snacks too. Maybe Yvonne can call
me godfather someday.”
“In your dreams,” Jared shot back, clearly in a bad mood.
I quickly typed, “Admin, silence him. Goodnight.”
Nathan actually muted Jared, and the group chat fell silent.
1y in bed, one armpletely imed by Yvonne as she nestled quietly against me, already fast asleep.
The next morning, I helped Yvonne get ready and dropped her off at school.
She was getting more independent these days.
Seeing her heading in such a good direction, I couldn’t help but let out a quiet sigh.
If Jared really thought the Darwin family had something to do with how he died in his previous life, then trust me- he’d be out for payback against them real soon.
