Loose 341

Yvonne ran over to me, grinning from ear to ear. “Mom, Nathan said he’s going to get me a learning tablet with tons of games that make you smarter!”

I nodded and asked, “Did you have enough to eat? Did you have a lot of cold treats?”

Wonne shook her head and mumbled, “Nope, I just had one ice cream and a popsicle.”

Nathan chuckled next to us. “It’s fine to have a little. All the other kids are eating them, too.”

“Mom, don’t worry. I’m really healthy. There’s no way I’ll catch a cold or get…” Yvonne sneezed loudly before she could finish.

Nathan and I both burst outughing. I looked at Yvonne, watching her bright, sunny personality start to shine through. She rubbed her nose andughed along with us.

It hit me at that moment. Maybe the failures of my previous life were really my responsibility all along.

Yvonne was like a nk canvas. How the adults raised her would decide what kind of person she’d be. If adults spoiled her, it would just bring out the worst in her. Kids were naturallyzy, greedy, selfish, and bossy.

That was why proper guidance from adults was so important. Setting boundaries and teaching her right from wrong would shape how she thought and handled her emotions as she grew up.

“Mom, why are you staring at me? Do I have something on my face?” Yvonne asked, looking curious.

I crouched down, fixed her cor, and gave her cheek a little pat. “No, I just realized you’ve gotten taller.”

“Really? It must be because I’ve been eating so welltely!” Yvonne beamed.

Just then, Yvonne pointed behind me and shouted, “Mom, look. It’s Aunt Quinn and Tracy!”

I turned around and saw Quinn and Tracying down for breakfast. They looked every bit the part of wealthy heiresses. Both of them were dressed in expensive,id–back outfits that screamed luxury and effortless style.

“Mom, should we go say hi?” Yvonne asked.

Honestly, I wasn’t thrilled to see them, but since Yvonne and Quinn were aunt and niece, it was only right for her

“Go ahead and say hi. Nathan and I will grab something to eat,” I told her.

Hearing that Yvonne took off running toward them

    say hello.

“Victorie, want me to grab you something to eat? What are you in the mood for? Nathan asked, grinning

“Dad told me he’s not getting married again, and he’s definitely not getting with Tracy. She came looking for him this morning, but he totally ignored her,” Yvonne said with a little huff.

“Really? You used to like her a lot,” I said.

Yvonne looked a bit awkward. “I did like her because she was always nice to me and bought me all sorts of things.

“Butst time, she just stood there while her nephew took my stuff and pushed me over. She didn’t even say anything. After that, I just didn’t like her anymore.”

“So that’s how it is,” I said, smiling. Yvonne was learning how to tell right from wrong and who was genuine. Tracy’s good–girl act wasn’t fooling her

    anymore.

Nathan was totally eavesdropping on our chat, looking amused. He didn’t say anything. He just listened quietly while Yvonne and I talked.

Just then, Tracy walked over, grinning and saying, “Yvonne, we’re heading out on the boat soon. Want to </ie with me and your Aunt Quinn? It’ll be a
