Chapter 111
By the time Victoria came back from shopping, it was already evening.
She had just entered her bedroom and was about to take out the jewelry set she bought to match with her outfits when her phone suddenly rang. Seeing Jack’s name on the screen, her face lit up and she answered quickly.
“Mr. Stone, why are you-”
Jack’s cold voice cut her off. “I’ve done what I promised you. You’d better keep your word and act like that incident never happened, or you’ll face the consequences.”
The threat in his tone made Victoria’s chest tighten. She lowered her voice and hurried to reassure him.” Don’t worry, I’ll keep my promise.”
Before she could finish, the call was cut off.
Victoria hurled her phone onto the bed, herplexion flickering between pale and flushed. If he weren’t the heir to the Stone family, she wouldn’t have given him a second nce.
But if he thought he could shake her off that easily, he was dead wrong.
In the following days, Liz focused on preparing documents for opening herw firm and studying for
graduate exams.
On Friday night, while she was reading, her phone rang. It was Michael.
“Liz, your grandmother fell on the stairs yesterday and just came out of surgery. If you have time, you
shoulde see her.”
Liz’s expression changed immediately. She quickly asked which hospital her grandmother was in,
changed her clothes, and rushed over.
By the time she arrived at the ward, half an hour had already passed. She knocked on the door, and soon it opened.
Standing there was a woman in her fifties. She froze when she saw Liz, then her eyes lit up with surprise.
“Ms. Liz! You’re here!”
“I heard my grandmother broke a bone, so I came to check on her,” Liz said.
Mrs. Wood, the woman who opened the door, had been working as a servant in the Smith household since she was twenty. She was a long–trusted hand in the Smith family estate, respected even by the
younger generation.
“Mrs. Smith Sr. just woke up. Come in, quickly,” Mrs. Wood said warmly.
Liz nodded and stepped inside.
When Mrs. Smith Sr. saw her, joy flickered in her eyes, but she immediately turned her head away. “Why don’t you just wait until I die and show up at the funeral instead?”
Her anger red again at the thought of Liz refusing to return to the family home.
Liz walked to the bedside and sat down. “Grandma, don’t say such unlucky things. You’ll live a long and healthy life.”
“I might have lived long if you didn’t keep upsetting me. At this rate, you’ll be the death of me!”
Seeing her grandmother still had the strength to make jokes, Liz couldn’t help butugh softly. “Before I
came, I was worried about your condition. But now it seems I don’t need to worry at all. At this pace, you’ll
be walking around as good as new in no time.”
“I won’t just be walking. I’ll probably fly straight to heaven,” Mrs. Smith Sr. snorted.
Liz sighed helplessly. “Grandma…”
Mrs. Wood chuckled. “Madam, before Ms. Liz came, you were the oneining nonstop that she never
visited. Now she’s here, and you’re driving her away? That’s not fair.”
Mrs. Smith Sr. gave a sharp hum. “Of course I’ll drive her away. She doesn’t want toe back to the
Smiths anyway, so whether I push her out or not, it’s the same thing!”
Liz fell silent.
“Grandma, why are you so insistent on me returning to the family?”
“Then why won’t you listen to me? Are you waiting until I drop dead before you’re satisfied?”
With Mandy about to return from abroad, holding a business management degree and a guaranteed path into Smith Corporation, Liz knew that if she did note back soon, she might never get another chance.
Her grandmother had always been sharp–eyed. She knew that Mandy might look obedient and sweet on the surface, but underneath she was calcting.
Otherwise, Liz wouldn’t have ended up disliked by her parents and even her brother, James Smith, after being back in the family for only a year.
In her grandmother’s eyes, Liz might not have been skilled at ttery or charming words, but she had a steady character, and that was a valuable quality.
