Chapter 505 Helping Each Other Out

    Jean kept rambling on.

    +8 Pearl

“Or maybe… you didn’t even want toe tonight, and your family dragged you here? If that’s the case<b>, </b><b>you </b>should be grateful it’s me. At least I’m not going to pressure you or anything.”

    But suddenly, Asher stopped

    Jean paused too.

She looked up–and immediately locked eyes with Asher’s.

    His

gaze was deep and quiet. As always, there was little warmth behind it, but tonight… there was something else flickering beneath the surface. Something she couldn’t quite read.

“I came because I wanted to,” he said. His voice was even, no hesitation, no emotion.

The seriousness in his tone and the way he said it made Jean freeze for a second.

She pressed her lips together and stood there silently.

Then she couldn’t help and burst into a littleugh and looked over at him yfully.

“Wow… I wouldn’t have guessed you were into stuff like this. Never saw iting.”

Asher parted his lips, like he wanted to say something. But he didn’t.

He shut his mouth and stayed silent.

A flicker of hesitation and struggle darted across his eyes.

He couldn’t bring himself to say it out loud. He couldn’t tell Jean-

    <i>I </i><i>came </i><i>because </i><i>of </i><i>her</i>.

    <i>No </i><i>other </i><i>reason</i><i>. </i><i>She </i><i>is </i><i>the </i><i>only </i><i>reason</i>.

    <i>But </i><i>admitting </i><i>that </i><i>made </i><i>me </i><i>sound </i>so <i>pathetic</i>.

    <i>She </i><i>had </i>no <i>idea </i><i>that </i><i>I’d </i>known <i>who </i><i>she </i><i>really </i><i>was </i><i>all </i><i>along</i><i>… </i>

Jean saw him fall into silence and figured maybe he was just shy after her teasing.

She let out a quietugh and said, “Alright, I’ll stop messing with you. That’s all I wanted to ask anyway. Let’s head back now-

    “Jean.”

Asher suddenly spoke up, catching herpletely off guard.

She blinked, looking up at the boy in front of her. His eyes were deep and dark like obsidian, drawing her <b>in </b>like gravity.

But after saying her name, Asher paused again.

Chapter 505 Helping Each Other Out

Jean stood there patiently, waiting for him to continue.

It was a long moment before he finally looked away, his gaze shifting slightly off to the <b>side</b>.

“If you ever need help, just let me know. I’ll be there for you”

Her eyes lit up instantly, like someone had switched on a light behind them.

    <i>I </i><i>could </i><i>feel </i><i>how </i><i>sincere </i><i>he </i>was. <i>Every </i><i>word. </i>

    Asher had <i>never </i>said <i>something </i><i>like </i><i>that </i><i>before</i>….

    <i>But </i><i>that </i><i>was </i><i>just </i><i>who </i><i>he </i>was–a man <i>of </i><i>few </i><i>words</i><i>, </i><i>but </i><i>full </i><i>of </i><i>quiet </i><i>actions</i>.

    <i>He </i>didn’t talk much<i>, </i><i>but </i><i>he’d </i><i>been </i><i>helping </i><i>me </i><i>in </i><i>all </i><i>the </i><i>little </i><i>ways </i><i>for </i><i>years</i>.

    <i>This </i><i>was </i><i>the </i>first <i>time </i><i>he’d </i><i>actually </i><i>voiced </i><i>it</i><i>, </i><i>like </i><i>making </i><i>a </i><i>promise</i>.

“Thank you,” she said, her chest swelling with warmth and joy. “Even if you hadn’t said it, I would’ve known. You’ve helped me so much over the years.”

She added with a soft smile. “We’ve always been good friends and then one has been there for each other. If you ever run into trouble, you cane to me too, okay?”

In her words, no joy appeared in Asher’s eyes. Instead, a trace of something dim and unreadable passed through them.

    <i>Good </i><i>friends</i><i>… </i>

He repeated those two words in his head.

A bitter taste welled up in his chest.

    <i>But </i>I <i>couldn’t </i><i>say </i><i>anything </i><i>else</i><i>—</i><i>not </i><i>now</i><i>. </i><i>I’d </i><i>already </i><i>pushed </i><i>myself </i><i>as </i><i>far </i><i>as </i><i>I </i><i>could</i>.

    <i>Those </i><i>words </i><i>just </i><i>now </i><i>were </i><i>already </i><i>the </i><i>limit </i>of <i>what </i><b><i>I </i></b><i>could </i><i>let </i><i>out</i>.

His eyshes trembled slightly, and he quickly buried every bit of emotion in his eyes.

In an instant, Asher had returned to his usual cool, indifferent self.

“Let’s go.” He shifted the subject, his gaze fixing straight ahead.
