Jean was surprised when she suddenly received a call from Asher. She immediately guessed that he had probably been released by the police.

“Did you make it home?” she answered the call, her voice cheerful and excited.

    “Yes,” Asher replied quietly.

Jean quickly noticed something unusual in his tone. Her eyebrows furrowed slightly without her realizing it.

    <i>Asher </i><i>sounded</i>… a <i>little </i>down.

“What’s wrong?” she asked gently, carefully.

“Nothing,” Asher shook his head. His tone remained calm. “I just wanted to let you know that I’m going back to the Lawson family.”

    Jean froze for a moment.

    <i>I </i><i>hadn’t </i><i>expected </i><i>Asher </i>to <i>take </i><i>such </i><i>a </i><i>decisive </i><i>step </i><i>in </i><i>acknowledging </i><i>his </i><i>heritage</i>.

    <i>I </i><i>had </i><i>thought </i><i>that</i><i>, </i><i>faced </i>with the truth <i>of </i><i>his </i><i>background </i><i>and </i><i>the </i><i>uncertainty </i><i>of </i>his <i>future</i>, <i>he </i><i>would </i><i>need </i><i>more </i><i>time- </i><i>time </i>to think, to <i>ept</i><i>, </i>to <i>decide </i>

    <i>But </i><i>Asher </i>had <i>made </i><i>up </i>his mind <i>so </i><i>quickly</i>, it <i>was </i><i>hard </i><i>to </i><i>believe</i>.

“But you don’t sound very happy about it,” Jean said, clutching the phone a little tighter, still worried about his state of mind.

“It’s not that I’m unhappy. It’s more like I’m ufortable,” Asher let out a small sigh and spoke his true feelings.

    <i>Returning </i>to <i>the </i><i>unfamiliar </i><i>home</i><i>, </i><i>not </i>knowing <i>what </i><i>to </i><i>expect</i><i>, </i>it <i>will </i><i>be </i><i>a lie </i><i>to </i><i>say </i>I’m <i>not </i><i>nervous</i><b><i>. </i></b>

It was the first time Jean had heard him say something so… age–appropriate.

    She couldn’t help butugh softly.

    <i>This </i><i>boy </i><i>had </i>always <i>acted </i><i>far </i>too <i>mature </i><i>for </i>his <i>years</i><i>—</i><i>calm</i><i>, </i><i>reserved</i><i>, </i><i>almost </i><i>unnervingly </i><iposed</i><i>. </i>I <i>had </i>grown <b><i>ustomed </i></b><i>to </i><i>seeing </i><i>him </i><i>expressionless</i><i>, </i><i>as </i><i>if </i>nothing <i>could ever bother </i>him.

    <i>But </i>now<i>, </i><i>for </i><i>once</i><i>, </i><b><i>Asher </i></b><i>showed his </i><i>insecurity</i>. A <i>rare </i><i>glimpse </i><i>of </i><i>the </i><i>teenager </i><i>he </i><i>really </i><i>was</i><i>. </i>

“You have to believe that this is your new beginning,” Jean said, choosing her words carefully. “Returning to the Lawson family will be the beginning of your second life. You’ll seed.”

    After <i>all</i><i>, </i><i>you’re </i><i>the </i><i>male </i><i>lead</i>. <i>Of </i><b><i>course </i></b><b><i>you’ll </i></b><i>get </i><i>a </i><i>good ending</i>.

    People <i>like </i><i>me</i>, <i>mere </i><i>cannon </i><i>fodder</i><i>, </i><i>had </i><i>no </i><i>such </i><i>luck</i><i>. </i>

At the other end of the line, a small chuckle escaped the boy’s lips.

    “Thanks,” Asher said suddenly.

Jean smiled. “No need to thank me. We’re friends, aren’t we?”

    <i>When </i><i>I </i><i>came </i><i>to </i><i>this </i>world, <i>I </i><i>had </i><i>expected </i><i>nothing </i><i>but </i><i>a </i><i>dull</i><i>, </i><i>quiet </i><i>existence</i><i>. </i><i>I </i><i>never </i><i>dared </i><i>to </i><i>hope </i>for <i>friendship</i>.

    But <i>somehow</i>, <i>without </i>realizing <i>it</i><i>, </i>I had <i>found </i><i>myself </i><i>surrounded </i><i>by </i><i>people </i><i>like </i><i>Sofia </i><i>and </i><i>Asher</i>. It is <i>an </i><i>unexpected </i><i>blessing</i>.

“Friends…” Asher murmured the word as if tasting it, repeating it to himself. After a short pause, his voice deepened.

“Yes, and I hope one day I can be the kind of friend you can count on.”

With that, Asher’s matter ended, at least for now.

At the Ginger mansion, only Jean remained. The rest of the household was filled with servants.

Sienna and Dominic had both left early that day. They’d been busytely, running around every day.

Jean was enjoying a rare moment of peace, lying in bed, nning to sneak in a nap when she heard the front door open downstairs.

Then came the sound of hurried footsteps.

    Jean frowned slightly.

The noise was disturbing, interrupting her rest.

She rolled over in bed, trying to ignore it.

But momentster, someone knocked on her bedroom door.

    “Ms. Ginger.”

It was one of the maids. There was a strange stiffness and nervousness in her voice.

    G

Jean sat up in bed and frowned. “What is it?”

“Mr… Mr. Matheo is back. And he asked for you specifically,” the maid stammered, her voice shaking.
