At the very moment she almost dialed, Nancy threw her phone, then bent forward to run her fingers through her hair.
She was clinging to the hope that Jayson would swoop in and handle the mess she got into like he always had.
But this time, he neither came to see her nor even bothered to call.
Her pride twisted against itself, while a nameless panic wed at her chest.
She believed that Jayson would help, and she wanted to wait for him to take the initiative.
Thest thing she wanted was to let him see her at her most panicked and broken because she knew he
wouldn’t like that side of her. What she needed was for him to feel for her on his own.
“I’ll try to handle this myself first. I’m sure Jayson will step in if he sees that.” Nancy shut her eyes
tightly, forcing herself to takefort in that thought.
But Sarah was already beside herself. She gasped. “You know perfectly well that you can’t handle this! Ariel used you of stealing her work on camera. The government will go after you. She’s trying to crush
you! That bitch is really ruthless!”
She had invested years of effort, grooming Nancy into someone of promise. They could have stepped into high society. But now, they were about to plunge straight into hell.
How could she not be angry<b>? </b>
Nancy’s reputation in the upper echelons of the country waspletely ruined.
Every avenue–her marriage, her career, even the rest of her life–was blocked. There was no way out.
With a pale face, Nancy said, “I–I’ll go talk to Mr. Warbrooke first. If he can help exin things for me, maybe I’ll have a chance at a lighter sentence.”
After all, Cedric had initially nned to take her in as his student. He would surely feel some sympathy
for her. 1
Determined, she headed straight to the Warbrooke residence. She couldn’t just sit and wait for disaster to
strike. If she did, the only thing waiting for her was a dead end.
But when she got there, she couldn’t even get in the door. The guard simply said, “Mr. Warbrooke said to
act as if you two never met. Please leave.”
Cedric’s message was clear.
A chill ran down Nancy’s spine.

She got that code from Cedric in the first ce. If he could vouch that she had no knowledge of it, it might at least soften the blow. (1)

“I just want to say a few words to Mr. Warbrooke. Please, can you let me through?” she pleaded, refusing
to give up.
The guard didn’t answer, only giving her a mocking look before shutting the gates in her face.
Nancy’s face fell. She didn’t expect there to be no leeway at all. Cedric had been on her side, so why…
Back in her car, she gripped the steering wheel tightly. Her usual calm was cracking under pressure.
After a long moment, Nancy suddenly remembered that Perry’s grandmother’s family had some connections in the federal investigative agency. She could try to smooth things over first. (19
At that thought, she called Perry.
The line rang for a while before he finally picked up. “Yes?”
Nancy didn’t notice anything unusual. She forced her voice to stay steady as she said, “Perry, I know this
is a lot of trouble, but could you help me reach some contacts in the federal investigative agency<b>?</b><b>” </b>
She and Perry had been close. After she returned to Eldoria, he cared about her quite a lot. At least at this moment, she felt he might show her somepassion.
There was a pause on the other end. “Look, I think you need to take responsibility for your own problems, and… honestly, I’m under no obligation to help you.”
Nancy froze. The coldness in Perry’s voice was unmistakable.
Without another word, he hung up.
Nancy was stunned for a long moment, unable to make sense of it. Why was Perry treating her so coldly<b>? </b>Weren’t they close before? Didn’t he… even have feelings for her? 1
