Chapter 91
The call went unanswered for a long time.
It was only about 8:00 pm. Betty was a mischievous old soul. She liked to watch dramas and scroll through the reels on social media. She shouldn’t already be asleep.
Ariel called thendline instead.
One of the household staff answered it. “Mrs. Larkin, Mrs. Larkin Senior is feeling under the weather these couple of days and is now resting. She didn’t have much of an appetite today.”
Ariel couldn’t help worrying. “What’s wrong? Is it her blood pressure?”
“The family doctor came to have a look. He said Mrs. Larkin Senior is having a cold and her blood pressure is fluctuating. Mrs. Larkin, are you free to drop by today? Mrs. Larkin Senior doesn’t really listen to us…”
Ariel hesitated.
It wasn’t appropriate for her to ignore Betty after learning about her condition. Besides, Betty had been nice to her. In every sense, she should visit Betty.
She hummed in acknowledgment. “I’ll be right there.”
After freshening up, she headed for Larkin Manor. She originally wanted to ask Betty if Jayson was there. Now, she had no choice but to visit herself.
Upon arriving at the manor, the household staff gave her a change of indoor slippers. Ariel spotted Betty, lying on her side on the couch in the living room.
When Betty heard Arieling in, she sat up instantly and smiled at her. “You’re back, Ari. They told me you’reing back, so I sat here waiting for you. Have you just got off work?”
Seeing that herplexion wasn’t too pale, Ariel felt relieved. “Grandma, are you feeling better? I heard you didn’t even want to have your meals.”
Betty lovingly held her hand. “It’s fine. As we age, we tend to get sick easily. It’s just like an intermittent diet.”
Ariel frowned. “How can you do that? Come, tell me what you want to eat, and I’ll make it for you.”
“Really?” Betty’s face immediately lit up. “I want oatmeal. You make the best oatmeal.”
Ariel smiled. “Sure. Wait here.”
She had learned how to cook because of Jayson. She poured her heart into it, so she was quite skilled in preparing oatmeal and all sorts of soups. After tasting her cooking, Betty would always crave more.
Ariel swiftly entered the kitchen. She rarely cooked ever since she started working at Faye Tech.
There was also no need for her to rush back during lunch hour just to cook for Jayson anymore. It had been less burdensome for her.
However, she had just served the oatmeal when she heard the whir of a car.
Jayson entered the living room. His gaze fell on Ariel. He noticed her hurrying in and out of the kitchen, her frail figure d in an apron, and his gaze became profound.
When Betty realized he was back, she chuckled. “I was just about to call you! Look, Ari was concerned about you working yourself too hard, so she purposely cooked for you today. Only she would be so attentive to you.”
Ariel paused. She sensed Jayson’s eyes on her again and felt a sense of awkwardness.
Feeling resigned, she nced at Betty. She knew Betty said that on purpose so that they could be closer. She wanted Jayson to be more affectionate to Ariel.
Still, it was all in vain. She had done the same thing for three years, but he never cared.
Jayson only thought of Ariel as a simp mainly because they were going to divorce. What would he think of her if Betty said that?
Indeed, Jayson merely jested. “We have the household staff for that. Your efforts are unnecessary.”
Even though Ariel was used to his reaction, she still felt suffocated because of his words.
She had never had wishful thinking that she would earn his genuine love, but he shouldn’t be looking down on her that way.
Even Betty was taken aback. “How is that the same?”
Jayson calmly sat at the dining table and changed the topic. “Are you feeling better, Grandma?”
Betty huffed, “I can live longer if you and Ari get along!”
Ariel didn’t respond to that.
Upon hearing that, Jayson smiled casually. “You’ll easily live a good, long life if you stop worrying over nothing.”
Betty red at him. Turning to Ariel, she felt sorry for her. “You should eat up. You’re getting thinner. How hard must you’ve been working for you to lose so much weight? You should just return to the manor. The household staff will take good care of you.
Jayson nonchntly nced at her.
Not knowing how to exin that she had thinned down because of her illness, and not because of work, Ariel served the food for Betty and glossed over the topic.
