Chapter 401

    :

That evening. Tuff returned home with news about the car ident.

‘It wasn’t Joyce after all!‘ Ka thought, surprised.

“I always thought it was her…” Ka frowned, her mind tangled withplicated feelings.

The garbage truck driver confessed right away during the first interrogation. Someone had paid him to crash into any car Maggie was riding in. It didn’t matter which vehicle she took. He was supposed to hit it.

There were two of them, splitting up to cover more ground. One tailgated the Prescott family’s car, and when he realized Maggie wasn’t inside, he forced the car up onto the curb.

After that, the garbage truck targeted the Lambert family’s car.

The n was meticulous and well–organized. If a taxi with a pregnant passenger hadn’t happened to pass by right then, and the garbage truck driver hadn’t been able to bring himself to hurt an innocent, hitting the brakes early, the Lambert family’s car would’ve been totaled.

“Whoever nned this really knew what they were doing! Did the driver say who was pulling the strings?” Ka’s heart clenched as she remembered the bullet wound medicine in Raymond’s bag.

Tuff said, “He was willing to talk, but he never actually saw the guy in person. All he knows is that it was a man wearing a ck mask when they made the exchange.”

“No security footage? What about bank records?” Ka asked.

“Nothing. They used cash,” Tuff replied.

“That makes it really hard to track down. Honey, what does your family actually do overseas?” Ka asked.

“Real estate and the import/export ofmodities. It’s all legitimate business, and thepetition isn’t cutthroat,” Tuff said, leaning against the headboard, still lost in thought about the ident.

When he first got the report from Maverick, he couldn’t help but wonder if Maverick had really done a thorough job. So he decided to talk to the garbage truck driver himself.

The Prescott family was well–known in Lunova. Almost no one would dare to cross them. They wondered who actually had the guts to go after the Prescotts.

“Honey, there’s something you should know,” Ka said, handing him her phone.

Tuff nced at the photo and instantly recognized the medicine box. “Is that for gunshot wounds?”

“Yeah, it fell out of your dad’s bag,” Ka replied.

Tuff shot upright, his face tense. “Wait, my dad got shot? No way, I have to go ask him.”

    Ka didn’t stop him.

‘If Dad really got shot, then someone seriously dangerous is messing with us behind the scenes, Ka thought, a chill running down her spine.

As the night deepened, snowkes drifted down, and the courtyard’s old–fashionednterns glowed softly in the haze, painting a picture straight out of a dream.

Ka stood at the window, thinking for ages before finally calling Landon. “Are youing to Lunova

    tomorrow?”

“Yeah, we’re all packed and ready to go,” Landon replied.

“Maybe you shouldn’te after all. I’m swamped these next few days,” Ka said.

Landon narrowed his eyes. “Busy? What could you possibly be so busy with during the holidays?”

“There are a lot of guestsing and going at the Prescott family, and I have to entertain them all. Maybe you guys should wait a bit beforeing over,” Ka said.

After a brief pause, Landon said, “Alright.”

Ka let out a huge sigh of relief, then put on a cheerful front and chatted with everyone at home.

But she couldn’t possibly hide it from the perceptive Landon.

After hanging up, Landon said to Amelia, ‘Something’s up with Ka.’

“Mrs. Prescott’s car ident was no ident? Then we need to get to Lunova right now,” Amelia eximed, shooting up from bed the moment she heard.

‘After all the chaos we’ve weathered with them, I can’t help but suspect there’s some old feud or vendetta behind this,’ Amelia thought, her instincts kicking in.

Landon couldn’t help butugh as he gently pulled Amelia back down onto the bed. “Come on, it’s the middle of the night. Why are you in such a hurry?”

“We can’t let Ka fight this battle alone. She needs us!” Amelia blurted out, clearly anxious.

Amelia had once been left to fight all by herself.

The fear of being dragged back by Zachary and the Edwards family, of getting hurt all over again, was still fresh in her memory.

She wasn’t about to let Ka go through that nightmare too.

“Tuff’s there, isn’t he? If he can’t even protect his own wife, what kind of man would he be?” Landon chuckled.

Amelia let out a breath and nodded. “Yeah, you’re right. Tuff’s definitely got this…”

Landon frowned and shot back, “Am I not strong too?”

Amelia rolled her eyes. ‘Really? He’s getting jealous at a time like this?‘

“I’m guessing Ka doesn’t want us getting caught up in this mess again. Whatever’s happening, it’s no small matter,” Landon said, his voice low and serious.

Amelia’s nerves, which had just started to settle, snapped right back to attention. “Then why aren’t you freaking out?” she demanded.

“We’ll stick to the n and catch the earliest flight to Lunova tomorrow. But let’s keep it under wraps from the Prescott family for now,” Landon said.

“So, we’re going to lend a hand behind the scenes?” Amelia asked.

“Yeah, let’s scope things out first. Give Daniel a heads–up. We’ll crash at his ce for now,” Landon replied.

    “Got it,” Amelia replied.

She immediately shot Daniel a message, saying they wereing home to celebrate the holidays.

Daniel was thrilled and quickly started making arrangements for their arrival, including a family dinner.

But Amelia, worried that things might get too serious and Ka would find out, suggested they keep it low- key and just have a cosy gathering at home.

When Tuff came back into the room, he looked troubled.

Ka’s heart sank. “What did your dad say?”

“He got shot while he was in Dreicean. We suspect the shooter might be working with the guy who crashed into my mom’s car,” Tuff said, his voice tight.

    Ka fell silent.

‘People who keep guns aren’t exactly saints. Just who did the Prescott family piss off this time?‘ Ka thought, anxiety gnawing at her.

“Honey, don’t worry. I’ll protect you and everyone else,” Tuff said, squeezing her hand tightly.

Ka looked down at his hand.

    He was on edge, anxious.

It was an awful feeling, knowing the enemy was lurking in the shadows while they were exposed out in the

    open.

But Ka was used to it,

Suddenly, she remembered those days back in spy training, dressing up in disguise and tagging along with her adoptive parents to all sorts of banquets and social gatherings.

She paused, a little dazed, and rubbed her forehead.

“Honey, what’s wrong?” Tuff asked, his voice full of concern.

“I… I think some of my memories areing back…” Ka said softly.

“Oh, are they the good parts?” Tuff asked, his voice tinged with anxiety.

‘God, please don’t let her remember the time I pulled a gun on her, he silently freaked out.

“Yeah, I guess you could say that,” Ka nodded. “But I still can’t picture their faces.”

    “Who?” Tuff asked softly.

    “My adoptive parents,” Ka answered.

Tuff’s heart skipped a beat, and he quickly cut her off. “Don’t think about it, or you’ll just end up with a headache.”

“What are you so worried about? I already told you I don’t me you,” Ka said with a reassuring smile. “Anyway, my face is fine now.”

“It’s all in the past anyway. You’re the only one left from the Limitless Sect, so there’s not much point in digging up those memories,” Tuff said, trying to sound casual but clearly wanting to leave it all behind.

Tuff still didn’t like thinking about that part of his life.

Ka smiled, deciding not to push it any further.

Tuff was right. Everyone from the Limitless Sect died in that chaotic fight.

She was the only one who managed to survive.

Even if she got her memories back, it wouldn’t matter.

“Honey, is there anything I can do to help?” Ka asked.

“No, I’ve got it covered,” Tuff replied.

Given how urgent things were, after making sure Ka was alright, Tuff headed straight back to the Flying Tiger Sect.

Ka spent a long time alone, turning things over in her mind, before deciding she couldn’t just sit back and do nothing.

Digging up secrets that couldn’t be found through normal channels was exactly her speciality.
