Hespere opted not to go inside, asking instead, “Would you mind speaking in my car?”

“Of course. Whatever works for you.” Adide stepped forward and gently put a hand on Hespere’s shoulder.

The moment she touched her, she realized Hespere was frighteningly thin, just skin and bone.

The two women got into the car.

Luna Hespere fought back her tears. After what seemed like a long, painful struggle, she finally spoke. “I want to ask you about something–could we bring the child back to Styxwarden? I n to have Stanley’s breeder, Hazel, look after her. Heather has a son, and all her grandchildren are boys. I think she’d truly love having a little girl around.”

Adide was stunned. She asked, pletely disbelieving, “Bring her back? Luna Hespere, this child… what would you do with her?”

She bit back the words, “This child isn’t Stanley’s,” knowing Hespere had likely already found out the truth by tracking them down.

    Hiding it would be pointless.

“Why, to raise her, of course. How could a baby this small survive the hardship of a shelter?”

Hespere managed a tragic smile. “The child is innocent. She didn’t choose her parents or her birth. The adults made the mistakes, and it’s up to us to take responsibility for them.”

Adide wholeheartedly agreed with her, deeply admiring her generosity of spirit.

She asked, “Does Stanley know you’re here? Does he… know that you know the truth?”

Hespere’s eyes brimmed with tears, but she held them back. “He thought he had fooled me, and at first, I believed him. But when I calmed down and thought everything through, it all became clear. It wasn’t that hard to figure out, was it?”

“If you take the child back, he might not appreciate it. And if you do, the secret will be out for good.”

“I came here fully prepared. We can still manage the secret–we’ll just say the child belongs to Hazel. Everyone in the pack knows Hazel has always wanted a daughter. As for any rumors

outside, as long as we deny them, they won’t stick.”

Adide looked at her, unable to stop herself from asking, “Doesn’t this hurt you, deep down?”

Hespere smiled sadly and shook her head. “I’m forty–eight years old. I’ve learned to ept many things. I know he loves me, but his heart is too big; it has room for too many people. What difference does one more child make?”

Adide pressed on. “You aren’t nning to bring the child’s mother back to the pack, are you?”

Hespere immediately shook her head. “No, not yet. I can’t bring myself to ept her right now. I only know that the child is innocent.”

She offered another bitter smile, then looked at Adide.

“If it were you, what would you do?”

Adide fell silent. She had never considered that situation, and she didn’t have an answer ready.

It was hard for her to imagine Hespere’s position; their circumstances werepletely different.

But she still thought seriously. If Lance had an affair and a child outside, could she be as generous as Luna Hespere and bring the child back?

    The answer was obviously no.

She answered honestly, “If it were me, I would choose to leave him. After that, whether he wants to bring the child in or how he does it, it would have nothing to do with me.”

Hespere’s tears finally spilled over. “I wish I could be as strong–willed as you are, but I can’t. This affects everything. I already have three grandchildren, all older than this child. I can’t afford to be so reckless. If I were to end the mating, wouldn’t I be the biggest joke in the world? I have to protect my pack and Lycan Luna Cami. I simply have too much to consider.”

    Adide fully understood her predicament.

But she couldn’t let Hespere take the child yet. Unless Stanley or Heath came to her directly with this proposal, she wouldn’t risk it.

This was a child’s life, and while Hespere was making a selfless sacrifice, she couldn’t fully trust the intent. Caution was necessary.

“If you truly wish to take the child, then please have Stanley or Heathe to the shelter personally to retrieve her. I cannot hand her directly to you,” Adide said.

She added, “Or, perhaps you should go home and think about it again, just to be sure you can truly ept this child. Bringing her home now only to regret itter would be unfair to everyone.”

Hespere sighed. “I have thought it through, but I understand your hesitation. I will return to the pack and discuss it with them.”

Adide nodded. “Very well. I will take Lily now.”

With that, Adide exited the car, joining Paisley.

Adide temporarily left the child with the shelter director. She exined that someone mighte to adopt herter.

The director held the little girl, her expression full of gentle kindness.

She sighed softly. “If someone is truly willing to adopt her and give her the love of a parent, that would be the best possible oue for the child.”
