Chapter 1723:
Frustration had curdled into fury. How could he call any of this suspicious?
Steven maintained his grip on her arm, physically blocking her from leaving or reaching for her phone. “I’ve known William for over two decades. Regardless of circumstances, he would not do that with any woman other than Ste. That is not who he is.”
Josie looked at him squarely. “What proof do you have?”
At the very least, the indisputable fact remained that Alisha had awakened in William’s bed.
Steven’s brow furrowed. “We’ve submitted the hotel bed sheets for forensic analysis. If the blood originated from sexual activity and William’s DNA appears in the evidence, I’ll abandon his defense immediately. But right now, the entire situation is riddled with inconsistencies.”
Josie’s mind raced.
If Steven was telling the truth, then someone had orchestrated an borate trap specifically targeting William. But if Alisha harbored genuine feelings for him, why wouldn’t she have seized the opportunity when it presented itself? She had engineered circumstances to get William alone in that hotel room — and then hadn’t gone through with it?

That made no sense at all.
Steven knew Josie might not believe him, so he leaned forward. “How about this — I won’t stop you from going to Ste, but give me a few days. Just wait until the test resultse back.”
Silence hung between them. Josie weighed his words, then slowly nodded.
She knew that if Ste discovered any of this, everything between her and William would shatter. Ste didn’t tolerate betrayal — never had, never would. Especially not something like this.
If something deeper lurked beneath the surface, she could afford to give him another week. But if seven days passed without proof of William’s innocence, she wouldn’t hesitate.
Ending something toxic hurt at first, but staying only stretched the suffering into something far worse.
“Fine. I’ll wait.” Her voice turned sharp. “But you tell me everything — and I mean everything. No games, no secrets.”
“William handed Alisha a project. He directed it to the Dixon Group, which means Hurst was probably behind all of this.” The Dixon Group was mixed up in this too? So Alisha hadn’t been working alone.
Josie held Steven’s worried gaze, her voice dropping low and steady. “Find out the truth. Fast. If you have nothing in a week, I’m telling Ste everything — and I don’t care how hard you beg.”
Steven nodded, a thread of relief loosening the tightness in his chest.
Josie stood, her voice cooling several degrees. “I should go.”
She turned toward the door, but Steven’s hand shot out and wrapped around her wrist. “Ms. Patel…”
Josie froze and nced back, confusion crossing her features. Had he remembered something else?
Steven hesitated, then plunged ahead. “I heard you like someone who listens. Someone devoted. I can be that. I want to be that — for you. Would you consider giving me a chance?”
Josie’s heart kicked hard against her ribs. She stared into his earnest eyes, words deserting herpletely.
