Chapter 1703:
The realization that he actually meant it brought tears spilling down Alisha’s cheeks. “Mr. Dixon, please! I need this job desperately. I swear I’ll never bete again. Just give me one more chance!”
Hurst dismissed her pleas with an impatient wave of his hand.
“Mr. Dixon, please! I’ll do anything you want if you let me keep this position!”
That made him pause. He studied her with renewed interest. “Anything?”
Alisha nodded frantically.
Something calcting flickered in Hurst’s expression. He beckoned her closer. “You just admitted you have feelings for William. You’re in love with him?”
Embarrassment heated Alisha’s face, but she nodded anyway. “Mr. Briggs helped me once, and I fell for him. But he’s made it clear the attraction isn’t mutual.”
Hurst had no interest in her romantic troubles. “What if I told you I could help you get him?”

Alisha stared at him in shock. “What? You’re saying you could actually help me be with William?”
A knowing smile curved Hurst’s mouth. “Absolutely. But Alisha, nothing in this world is free. If I help you get what you want, you’ll owe me.”
Alisha’s lips pressed into a wary line. “What would you want in return?”
Hurst dropped his voice to a conspiratorial murmur. “You’re aware that Dixon Group desperately needs partnerships to staypetitive. The problem is that William controls most of the lucrative contracts in this city — no one else can get close to them.” Alisha nodded slowly, beginning to see where this was heading. “And?”
“So I can help you be with him, but once you’re by his side, all I ask is that you persuade him to pass a few projects to Dixon Group. I’m not asking for much — nothing that wouldpromise you. It’s mutually beneficial. You get the man you want, I get the business deals I need. Everyone wins. You’re an educated woman, Alisha. Surely you can recognize a smart opportunity when it’s presented to you.”
Alisha wavered, uncertainty flickering across her face.
She understood exactly what Hurst was proposing, and he was right — on paper, it looked like everyone would benefit. But wouldn’t that make her just as maniptive as everyone else? Wouldn’t she be using William too? Her feelings for him were genuine, which meant she didn’t want their rtionship tainted by calctions of profit.
Still, if she refused this offer, she might never get another opportunity to be close to William.
After wrestling with her conscience for several long moments, she finally gave in. “Fine. I’ll do it. But you have to guarantee you can actually get me close to him. If you can’t deliver on your end, I won’t deliver on mine.”
Satisfaction spread across Hurst’s face. He reached out and patted her shoulder. “Alisha, I knew I’d read you correctly. I’ll text you an address at eight tonight. Don’t bete.”
When she emerged from his office, brilliant sunlight poured through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, stretching her shadow long across the floor. She made her way to the restroom and confronted her reflection in the wall of mirrors, emotions churning chaotically in her chest.
