Chapter 1653

    Chapter 1653:

“I know you were concerned she might be one of Arlo’s nts, but based on everything we’ve uncovered, she’s exactly what she appears to be — just a regr college student.” The words should have brought relief, but Ste couldn’t identify what she actually felt. Relief, or something even closer to dread?

Leaning back against the sofa, Steven studied the seriousness on her face. “Are you afraid that William — the way he is now — might actually develop feelings for someone else?”

Ste’s breath caught in her throat. Her mouth opened, but the only words that emerged were, “I honestly don’t know.”

In the photographs spread before them, Alisha’s resemnce to Ste was undeniable — particrly around the eyes.

Steven gently patted her shoulder. “I don’t think you need to lose sleep over this. William might just be trying to get under your skin. Some naive college student who barely knows how the world works? That’s not the kind of woman William has ever been attracted to.”

Ste’s throat constricted painfully. She sat without speaking for what felt like ages, her face growing increasingly pale.

Steven watched her carefully, then pressed on. “Look, I know William’s been distant with youtely, but he’s dealing with so much right now. He doesn’t have the bandwidth to pursue other women. Ste, you need to have faith in him.”

Throughout all the years Steven had known him, William had never been the type to let romantic entanglements interfere with his priorities. And if Steven was being honest, Alisha didn’t possess the kind of striking beauty that would turn heads. The only truly remarkable thing about her appearance was her eyes — strikingly simr to Ste’s.

That thought prompted him to speak again. “What if it’s precisely because her eyes look like yours that William took notice of her?”

Ste had registered the simrity the moment she’d seen Alisha’s photograph. Steven’s observation did nothing to ease her worries — if anything, it only twisted the knife deeper.

She shook her head. “I really don’t know anymore.”

She had lost the ability to decipher what William was thinking.

Steven patted her shoulder once more. “William isn’t the same as before. You’re going to have to fight harder for this rtionship, and you need to believe in what you two had together. I’m convinced that somewhere deep inside, he still loves you. It’s just those imnted memories wreaking havoc on everything.”

Weeks ago, Ste would have agreed with him immediately. Buttely, she had begun to suspect the situation was far moreplicated than that.

Even if Arlo had nted fabricated memories in William’s mind, the real memories still existed alongside them. It all came down to which version of the truth William chose to ept.

When she had been the one suffering from memory loss, William had believed she’d betrayed him. She could understand that, given the circumstances. But now that her memories had returned, William still refused to fully ept that Arlo’s imnted memories were lies. That was his own choice.

Which meant the broken state of their rtionship couldn’t be med entirely on Arlo anymore.
