Chapter 1866

    Chapter 1866:

Bethelughed so freely and fully that the sound carried through the entire living room.

Christina stood near the doorway and smiled as she watched. Robin had a rare gift for bringing joy to those around him, and he gave it to Bethel as generously as if she were his own family.

Then she felt it — a familiar warmth at her back, as a broad, solid chest pressed gently against her.

Christina breathed in a familiar, wonderful scent that settled over her like calm.

She rested her hands on the arms wrapped around her waist, turned her head, andughed softly. Dn leaned in and pressed a quick, gentle kiss to her lips, then drew her a little closer and rubbed his cheek against her forehead, looking at her with quiet, unguarded warmth.

“Robin is remarkably good at making Bethelugh,” Dn murmured, his voice low. “Perhaps we should let him visit more often.”

He was not unaware of Robin’s feelings for Christina. The thought carried a faint undercurrent of unease — but only faint. His trust in Christina was absolute. He knew she saw Robin as nothing more than a friend, and if Robin ever overstepped, Dn was certain she would put distance between them without hesitation. Her happiness mattered more to him than his own mild difort. And he knew that when Bethel was happy, Christina was too. Making sure Christina could cherish every remaining year with Bethel was all he truly cared about.

“I thought you disliked having guests in the house,” Christina said softly, tilting her head back to look at him.

Dn tightened his arms around her andughed under his breath before pressing a kiss to her forehead. “Your happiness matters more to me than my privacy. Seeing Bethel smile means seeing you smile.”

Christina felt the words settle somewhere deep. She turned in his arms, took his face in her hands, and kissed him. “Thank you, Dn,” she whispered.

He smiled and kissed her back — slow and unhurried. “Anything for you, Chrissie.” Then he tucked his face against her neck and breathed her in, the way people who love each otherpletely tend to do, drawn together by something quieter and more instinctive than they could name.

When the food was ready, everyone gathered in the dining room.

“Robin, what do you think?” Bethel asked, her eyes bright with anticipation.

Robin muttered, “It’s decent, I suppose. Nothing to write home about. One of these days, Bethel, I’ll cook for you myself and show you what a proper meal tastes like.”

“I’d love that. It’s very sweet of you,” Bethel replied, her smile widening.

Robin reached across the table for the grilled salmon — and the entire te was smoothly removed from his reach. Dn had taken it and set it in front of Christina.

“Since you find the cooking so unremarkable, I’ll do you a favor and limit your portion,” Dn said pleasantly, using the tongs to ce a generous piece on Christina’s te. “Chrissie, make sure you eat well.”
