Chapter 1836

    Chapter 1836:

The father and son crumpled to the floor, battered and broken, a pitiful sight.

“If you’ve gotten all your anger out, I’ll have my men take them away,” Christina said.

“We are finished here. We leave the rest to you, Miss Jones,” Etta answered.

Christina raised a hand to her staff. “Get them out. The police will be here any moment.”

“Yes, Miss Jones!” The security guards hauled the two men out of the room without another word.

“Etta, you and your son stay,” Christina said. She turned to the rest of the staff. “The others may go.”

“Yes, Miss Jones,” they answered in unison, filing quickly out of the room.

Etta took her son by the arm and brought him before each member of the Jones family. Once the introductions were made, she and her son bowed deeply in gratitude.

“Thank you, Miss Jones. Thank you, Mrs. Jones…”

Etta expressed her thanks to every person present, and her son followed her lead until they had spoken to each member of the family in turn.

“That’s enough of that,” Christina said, gently helping Etta straighten up. “To us, you are a friend, Etta.”

“Miss Jones, I cannot thank you enough for everything,” Etta said, her voice breaking. “If it weren’t for you, I would still be living a lie.”

“That is simply what people do for their friends,” Christina replied.

Hurley looked at Etta’s son with wide eyes. “I had no idea the man I met on the street was actually Etta’s son. And it’s wonderful to see you have your sight back.”

“I owe it entirely to Miss Jones,” the man said, dropping to one knee before Christina. “Miss Jones, please allow me to serve you. Whatever you need, I will be there. I will work for you for as long as I live.”

Christina moved quickly and helped the young man to his feet. “Didn’t I tell you? You really must stop thanking me so much,” she said.

“I’m sorry, but I honestly don’t know any other way to show you how much I appreciate it,” he replied, his expression earnest.

“If you want a job, you’re wee to work here. We’ll give you a good sry and full benefits,” Christina said, smiling at him.

Etta gave her son a discreet nudge. He was standing there looking thoroughly bewildered. “Well? Don’t just stand there — tell Miss Jones thank you!” she whispered.

“Thank you so much, Miss Jones!” the young man burst out, so overwhelmed with gratitude that he nearly dropped to his knees again.

Christina fixed him with a firm look before he could. “I mean it. If you try to kneel one more time, I will have you shown out of the house,” she warned.

“I’m sorry, Miss Jones,” he murmured, standing stiffly, unsure what to do with his hands.

Christina turned to Etta and exined, “The poison was in his body for a very long time. He’ll need to continue his medication for a while before he’s fully recovered.”
