Chapter 1796

    Chapter 1796:

After a brief stillness, he finally broke the hush of the hospital room. “Aren’t you going to sleep?”

His voice was soft and low, barely above a murmur, gently drawing Gillian back from her spiraling thoughts. She jolted slightly, returning to herself, and met his eyes. For an instant, she thought she caught a trace of warmth there. She blinked, a little unsteady, and when she looked again, it had vanished.

Perhaps it had only been her imagination. How could Alban possibly harbor feelings for her? His consideration toward her was probably nothing more than a sense of responsibility — after all, she had given birth to his child.

“I’m going to sleep.” Suppressing the restless flutter in her chest, Gillian turned away, her expression cooling as she reached out to switch off the light.

She settled onto the bed beside Adide’s, while hey on the sofa. They weren’t far apart, and every small movement was audible, yet the space between them felt immeasurable.

With her back turned to him, Gillian stared into the faint darkness. Her thoughts remained tangled, and her heart found no peace. Alban unsettled her far too easily. She wondered if creating more distance between them would be the wiser choice.

But when Adide crossed her mind, helplessness swept over her once more. She had no right to deprive her daughter of a better life or a future filled with promise.

From the sofa, Alban watched Gillian’s silhouette, the slightest smile curving his lips. Even knowing she remained guarded — and might even be contemting escape — he was resolved to dedicate his life to safeguarding her and Adide. It would be enough to remain at a distance, simply ensuring their safety and happiness. Protecting them was a duty he intended to uphold for the rest of his life.

The following day, Alban was up at dawn and stepped out to pick up breakfast. He stood by and watched Gillian and Adide finish their meal before heading out of the hospital.

Not long after Alban stepped away, Christina came into the ward.

“Are you certain you want Adide discharged today?” Christina asked.

“Yes,” Gillian answered, nodding without the slightest pause.

Christina reached out and brushed Adide’s hair softly, then turned her eyes to Gillian. “Shouldn’t you talk this over with the Martels first?”

Gillian kept folding and packing their things. “I’ll let them know after we’ve left the hospital,” she said.

“Alright, if that’s what you’ve decided,” Christina replied, choosing not to intervene and honoring Gillian’s choice.

Gillian hesitated, her movements stilling as she lifted her head to look at Christina. “Miss Jones, if I eventually return Adide to the Martel family, will you resent me?”

Christina held her gaze and smiled calmly. “No, I won’t,” she said firmly.

“But I promised that we’d spend our entire lives repaying your kindness. Doing this feels like betraying my word,” Gillian said.

“You aren’t breaking anything. I’ve given you permission to decide — consider it my instruction. You should follow what your heart tells you,” Christina said, her smile gentle and reassuring.

Emotion surged through Gillian, leaving her deeply moved. She understood that Christina had taken her feelings into ount and was deliberately easing her guilt, making it clear that her promise still stood.

Gillian’s eyes burned red as her voice faltered. “Miss Jones, you’ve treated us so well. Meeting you truly changed our fate.”

If Christina had never crossed their path, they never would have found Alban again, and would likely have remained trapped in bitter, unhappy lives.
