Chapter 1434

    ?Chapter 1434:

Her voice cracked with emotion, and her tears fell one after another—delicate, unstoppable, like a string of pearls slipping through trembling fingers.

“I’m sorry. Ah—damn it,” Morse tried to sit up, but pain shot through his side. The movement pulled at his wound, forcing a sharp gasp out of him.

Chloe’s tears stopped in an instant. Her eyes went wide as she rushed closer. “What’s wrong? Does it hurt? Should I get Dr. Emmett to check on you?” she asked anxiously.

“Dr. Emmett?” Morse frowned, remembering Calvin was supposed to be back in Apresh.

“He’s the one who saved you!” Chloe said, pouting. “If Dr. Emmett hadn’t shown up when he did, you’d be gone by now. You were seriously injured. The doctors here weren’t sure they could save you.”

As she spoke, Chloe leaned in, her face turning serious. “And for the record, I saved you, too. From now on, you’re not allowed to die unless I say so.”

“Alright,” Morse said with a small smile, his eyes warm and soft.

“I’ll go tell a doctor and let Dr. Emmett know,” Chloe said, getting up to leave.

But before she could take a step, Morse caught her wrist, his expression hardening. “Wait.”

“What is it?” Chloe asked, confused.

“It’s too dangerous for you to wander off alone,” Morse exined, worry etched across his face.

Since he couldn’t move much himself, he added quietly, “I’ll make a call and arrange a few bodyguards.”

“Bodyguards?” Chloe sighed, touching her forehead. “There are already like ten outside. My brother took care of itst night. And this is a hospital. It’s safe enough.”

Morse looked at her sweet, oblivious face and couldn’t help letting out a quiet sigh.

She’d lived such a sheltered life that she didn’t truly understand how dangerous the world could be. In her mind, being in a crowd meant being safe.

But if the shooting wasn’t random, danger could still be close, even here. Anyone walking these halls could be an enemy in disguise.

“Do you have Dr. Emmett’s number? Just call him yourself,” Morse said.

Even after thinking it through, Morse couldn’t shake his unease. Bodyguards or not, there were no guarantees she’d be safe. He had a gut feeling that someone was after Chloe, and that made her situation far more dangerous than his.

“I do!” Chloe said proudly, her smile lighting up her face. “Dr. Emmett gave me his number himself! People say he’s cold, but I think he’s really kind and warm.”

Her cheeks flushed with pride. Calvin had personally asked for her phone number—one of the few he’d ever done so. Even if her brother’s influence yed a part, it didn’t diminish her sense of aplishment.

Morse couldn’t help but be charmed by her. That little smile of hers made his own stretch wider, warm and unmoving. He couldn’t look away. The longer he stared at her, the more he wanted to memorize every detail, every expression. It was impossible to get enough of Chloe.

Chloe picked up her phone and called Calvin, not even hesitating to ask him to bring breakfast.

She didn’t trust anyone else with the task, and since she couldn’t step out herself, Calvin seemed like the safest choice.
