Brendon rushed inside with Katie and Ynda close at his side.

Then, in the middle of the hallway, a woman passed Brendon, and his gaze instinctively followed. The woman wore a mask, her features half-hidden, but she wasn’t anyone he recognized. Still, something about her felt strikingly familiar.

It struck Brendon with a strange familiarity, as if he had crossed paths with that woman once before. He froze, staring after her retreating form, and Christina’s image suddenly zed through his mind. Even with her face concealed, the woman’s build carried an uncanny resemnce to Christina.

Logic told him the person beneath the mask was a stranger, yet an urge burned in him to rip it away and see the truth. Before the thought could fade, he was already striding toward her.

Before Brendon could take a step, Katie quickly seized his arm.

“Brendon? What are you staring at? We need to hurry!” Katie’s voice edged with urgency.

Katie followed Brendon’s line of sight, narrowing her eyes at the tall woman’s back. The resemnce was uncanny—it was just like that wretched Christina; yet the face beneath the mask was unmistakably not Christina’s.

Katie was certain she could recognize Christina anywhere.

“You’re right. Let’s not waste time—let’s split up and search for King,” Brendon said.

    “Okay!” Katie nodded firmly.

Ynda slowly pulled her gaze away from the tall woman. At her sides, her hands curled into fists. A gnawing unease tightened in her chest as she realized Christina’s hold on Brendon seemed to be deepening. He had just been captivated by a woman whose figure merely resembled Christina’s, even to the point of wanting to follow her to confirm if it was Christina. He was practically obsessed.

Ynda thought grimly that she needed to bind Brendon to her in marriage soon—he was herst hope, her final lifeline.

As the trio walked on, the woman in question stepped into a waiting car. “It’s hrious how those three fools walked right past you and didn’t even recognize you,” Davina said with a peal of raucousughter.

“If my disguise were so easily seen through, I’d be out of work,” Christina replied, her eyes sliding toward Davina, who was also hidden behind a disguise. They were unrecognizable unless by someone who had known them intimately for years. Familiarity with their habits might give a hint, but certainty was still difficult. The artificial masks they wore could only be removed with a special potion; no ordinary method could tear them off.

Davina admired her reflection in the rearview mirror with satisfaction. “Your art of disguise is wless—utterly without a single w. If I keep this mask on long enough, I might start believing this is my real face.”

Christina let out a softugh before saying, “That’s out of the question. You can’t keep it on too long, or your real face will be damaged. Let’s drive back home and remove them.”

“Alright!” Davina started the engine, and the car rolled away.
