“Are you nervous?”.
Christina asked gently.
Lauretta admitted without hesitation, “Yes.”.
Her hands twisted together anxiously, her heart weighed down by an inexplicable unease.
“Do you have no n to tell Dominic about the existence of your child?”.
Christina asked softly. She surmised this was the very reason Lauretta looked so unsettled.
“I don’t know how to bring it up, and this marriage is more of a deal for him to satisfy his family’s demands…”.
Lauretta exhaled with a weary sigh. Once the contract ended, she would have her freedom again and repay the debt she owed him. Revealing the existence of her child hardly seemed necessary.
A while back, she had only agreed to marry Dominic to secure Woodfort, while their union helped him fend off his family’s pressure to settle down. His family had always approved of them together, though she herself had broken off the engagement after bing pregnant. Now, she was the perfect choice to help…
Dominic met his family’s demands. As long as she was the bride, their expectations would be satisfied.
“Maybe, after some time together, the two of you might actually fall for each other,”.
Christina remarked casually.
Lauretta was striking, and Dominic was undeniably handsome. From Christina’s perspective, they made a picture-perfect couple, and if they truly ended up together, it might be a good thing.
“That’s impossible,”.
Lauretta said firmly, forcing a smile that barely masked her pain. “I know he has someone he loves, and I’m just a way for him to ease his family’s concerns.”

When Lauretta had first agreed to Dominic’s proposal, she never expected to develop feelings for him. Yet, as the days passed, she realized she had fallen for him.
The discovery terrified her. She feared Dominic would uncover her concealment of her child. She feared she would grow even more attached, eventually longing for something that could never belong to her. Dominic’s heart already belonged elsewhere—to the woman he truly wished to wed. If she allowed her longing to grow unchecked, she feared she would make mistakes, clinging to a role that was never meant for her. Dominic was never hers, and that very attachment would make letting go all the more difficult.
“Do you really have to marry him?”.
Christina asked, her gaze softening as a sigh rose within her. She knew she should not interfere in another’s choices, nor could she. Her words only slipped out because Lauretta’s plight stirred memories of her own failed marriage to Brendon. Dominic was a better man than Brendon in many ways, yet love was never something that could be forced. Christina understood too well how bitter a bond built on obligation, not affection, could be. If it wasn’t necessary, it was better to let go of something destined to bring only pain. Otherwise, that kind of tie would only leave both hearts wounded.
