Chapter 1643

    Chapter 1643:

But this time the fog parted.

    He saw her clearly.

    His breath stopped.

She was a fragile thing — cheeks smudged with dirt, hair a tangled mess from the rain. But her eyes held a rity, a fierce determination that cut through the gloom. A tiny, round mole nestled at the corner of her eye, glistening with raindrops.

Those features. That spirit. They were unmistakably Maia’s — the woman she would be.

    “It’s her. It’s really her!”

He reached out, desperate to touch her cheek. His fingers passed through empty air. All he could do was hover there, a helpless ghost, drinking in the sight of her with aching, greedy eyes.

He watched as little Maia’s cunning and courage unfolded before him. After luring the assassins away, she didn’t flee in terror as any ordinary child would have — nor did she rush back immediately. Instead, she used the terrain to her advantage, crouching behind a trash bin and waiting until the men had stormed off in frustration before cautiously creeping back.

She returned to his hiding spot — a dead-end alley reeking of garbage. Young Maia crept toward the massive green bin and rapped her knuckles gently on its surface.

    “Hey — it’s me. They’re gone.”

She was speaking to the boy hidden inside — Chris’s younger self.

    No answer came.

The moment she pulled the cover off, a shriek tore from her throat.

Inside, the boyy with a bullet wound to his head, blood dried in a dark trail from his temple. His eyes had long since gone ssy, as if he had been gone for some time.

    “No!”

Chris jolted awake with a violent start.

Then came a crash. His wheelchair tipped over, sending him sprawling to the floor. Gasping for air, he looked around wildly, disoriented. Why had the dream ended like that? That wasn’t how it happened — was it?

He crawled desperately toward the phone that had skidded across the floor. He had to call Maia. He had to tell her — the one he had always loved, the one who saved him, it was her all along. He needed to beg for her forgiveness, to make her understand how sorry he was for everything he had done.

Meanwhile, Maia arrived at MCN’s main office and stepped into the meeting room. Pattie and Rnd, who had been waiting anxiously, rose immediately. Rnd offered a curt nod, his eyes searching Maia’s face with quiet concern.

Pattie, however, rushed over at once, looping her arm through Maia’s and pulling her toward the seat beside her. She looked at Maia intently, and after a moment, her eyes grew wet.

“Maia — you’re finally here. I was so worried about you.”
