Chapter 399: Just a glimpse...

Chapter 399: Just a glimpse...

Since none of the calls was connecting, Ss decided to take another approach and do something else. After a brief thought, he made a decision.

If by morning there wasn’t any response from them, then perhaps taking a trip to the Allen Group and asking to see Jessica might open the situation up.

Maybe he would get to hear the whispers, the fears and possibly the rumors that might have shaken the group after the ident.

Above all, he hated being kept in the dark. And with Jessica havingid off several staff members of the Group, he no longer had any insider feeding him information.

"It seems I should have taken this step earlier," he muttered under his breath. "I guess I’ll be starting all over again. But maybe this time, it’ll finally be for the best."

As he turned toward his study to deal with other matters, his phone rang. He pulled it out. The screen lit up with the truck driver’s number.

"Sir, we are done," the man said, his voice calm andposed.

Ss listened in silence, straining to catch any background noise around the man. But all he heard was an eerie calmness, quiet and the kind of silence that felt like someone hiding in the shadows.

"Who are you with?" Ss asked, his voice clipped.

The man hesitated briefly. "Sir... after the job was done, the scene became chaotic. I had to leave without waiting for the rest. At the moment, I’m alone."

Ss’s breath grew heavy. This wasn’t the answer he wanted.

How could the scene be so chaotic that they scattered without confirming if she was actually dead, unlike the case of Davis?

He had instructed them to handle it on a lonely road, a ce where rescue would be nearly impossible.

And now this man dared to mention a chaotic scene. Unless someone else had dipped their hand into the n.

He couldn’t help but wonder what the result might be. Is she dead? Or alive. It seems only time will give this response.

    What happened?" Ss demanded.

"We didn’t expect the Allen security team to be nearby during the ident. When they appeared, we had no choice but to abandon the scene to avoid being captured."

"Are you saying you escaped them?" His voice dropped, careful and tentative. Even now he hoped the mess hadn’t left any trace.

That was the reason he had prepared this feast tonight, to erase everyone connected to this n.

"Yes. I managed to lose them from my trail."

"Does that mean you cane over now for your bnce?" Ss pressed. Taking them one after another might always be less messy.

"I would prefer a funds transfer," the man said cautiously.

"Haven’t you read the news? My ounts were frozen. Confiscated by thew," Ss replied pensively, his eyes narrowing with undisguised coldness.

"Sir, I can’t expose myself to the Allen security team at the moment, I am not ready to lose my life... I still have a family to care for."

Ss opened his mouth to speak, but the line went dead. The sharp beeping sound echoed in his ear. His fist tightened around the phone.

This wasn’t the n. None of this was what he had envisioned. He would not and could not...allow a mere truck driver to ruin everything . Rage swelled in his chest.

Before he could redial, another call came in. This time, another person repeating the same story and the same excuse of running away from the Allen family.

His brow furrowed deeply. "Why does this feel... off?" he muttered.

He took a long breath. If Mohammed could not go to the mountain, then the mountain would go to Mohammed.

His gaze shifted to thevish banquetid before him, food steaming, wine untouched, yet they are about to end up in the trash can, he rubbed his brow, his frustration bubbling over.

    ~Elsewhere~

The room was brightly lit, every corner covered by cameras. Angled lenses ensured no blind spot remained.

Communication devices, synthesizers, call trackers, recorders, and glowing monitors lined the walls in perfect order.

A few young men sat bound tightly to chairs. Sweat beaded on their foreheads and their body mmy from the sweat, their messy hair clinging damply across their temples.

They stared at the guards standing watch, their hearts pounding. "We’ve already done what you asked," one of them muttered, voice trembling.

"Of course you have," a guard replied coldly. "But that doesn’t erase the crimes youmitted."

If not for Davis’s order, he would have made these fools live a life worse than death. He couldn’t stop imagining their guts.

But Davis wanted them alive, useful. Make them bait for the man behind the curtain.

"What more do you want from us?" one of them snapped, eyes boring into the guard.

The guard raised a brow inquisitively "What more do I want from you?" He tapped his cheek briefly, "very simple, your life."

The other man paled "You..u don’t...mean that right? We are only doing ...."He stammered but a cold re from the guard had him shut up.

"You can’t do such, it’s totally..."

The guard chuckled darkly. "Do you really not understand your situation?" He cast a nce at his colleague. "Remind him not to talk too much. It wouldn’t be... healthy."

The other guard nodded, flexing his knuckles, stepping forward with the eagerness of a predator. But the voice of the Chief Guard halted him mid-step.

"No bruises," he ordered. "The boss won’t like it. Besides" his lips curled into a cruel smirk "we still need to have some fun with the man hiding in the shadows."

His words sent shivers down the captives’ spines. They could feel the hungry energy radiating from the guard who was itching to hurt them.

Since their capture, they had been bound here, helpless. Hours dragged on and at some point, they wondered if they had forgotten. It should be night already.

Earlier, the Chief Guard had promised them freedom if theypleted a minor task...just luring their master out. But now... it was clear this wasn’t so simple.

Who would have thought it wasn’t just a simple task.

With a click, a wall socket was switched on, their gaze snapped toward the sound.

With a sharp click, a socket snapped on. Their eyes darted to the sound.

Their breath hitched, eyes widened like saucers at the sight of the sleek ck rod, sparking with visible blue arcs at the prong while it hummed like a swarm of angry bees.

The guard held it casually as if it were nothing more than an extension of his arm. Their ears buzzed at the crackling sound that filled the room, drowning out their frantic heartbeats.

The guard chuckled darkly, "This is just a glimpse."

"What... what are you trying to do wi...AAAARGHHH!"

    AAAARGHHH!"

    AAAARGHHH!"

His scream tore through the night and the apartment as it echoed into the distance.

All night long, the guards inflicted torture in carefully measured doses. Pain seared through the men, but not a single bruise was left on their skin; nothing that would raise Ss Louis’s suspicion when he finally came to meet them.
