Chapter 381: Davis Allen just left the country...

With both of them reaching the conclusion about Davis’ trip for the business summit, he led Jessica to visit Lady Matilda in her room.
They arrived at her door, Jessica tapped lightly but received no response.
She nced at Davis, her brows furrowed. "I hope she isn’t doing anything reckless because of the same people that wanted her dead," she whispered uneasily.
After a pause, she knocked again, this time more firmly. A brief silence lingered before a faint shuffle sounded within, followed by a weary voice:
"Come in."
Jessica and Davis exchanged a knowing nce. She pushed the door open and they stepped inside together.
The room was brightly lit. Lady Matilda sat on the bed with a few scattered photographs beside her. Her tired gaze lingered at the doorway, softening when she saw Jessica.
Jessica walked forward with a gentle smile. "Grandma," she called softly.
"You are here?" Lady Matilda answered, her voice weak but affectionate.
Davis moved in from the door, his face unreadable. "Grandma," he greeted evenly.
Her eyes flickered to him, swirling with emotions; gratitude, helplessness, and something else he couldn’t quite ce.
"Are you... okay with my decision?" she asked slowly.
Davis inclined his head. "I am sorry for causing you pain."
Lady Matilda sighed. "Don’t worry about that. Sooner orter, it would have happened."
Jessica sat beside her and sped her hand. Lady Matilda’s voice wavered as she continued. "For years, I tolerated their actions, perhaps too much. I thought leniency was the right path... but never did I expect they would sink so low—plotting to drown a pregnant woman in a poisoned pool."
Her hand trembled as she lifted a photo and set it aside. "That was the peak of their cruelty. I can’t excuse them anymore. You only gave me a reason to do what I should have done long ago."
She nced at Jessica and patted her head softly. "You have suffered, my dear."
Jessica shook her head, while Davis exhaled in relief. As long as Lady Matilda didn’t resent him, that was all that mattered.
"Grandma, are you really okay?" Jessica asked with worrycing her voice.
"Silly girl, you worry too much," Lady Matilda said gently. "Tell me instead—how are you coping with yourst trimester?"
Jessica hesitated. "Grandma, I feel dizzy at intervals. Like a slow breeze, and then I get lightheaded."
Lady Matilda’s brows furrowed. "Have you seen the doctor?"
"I n to, tomorrow."
Davis spoke up, his tone firm. "Grandma, I’ll be leaving Jessica in your care. I have to attend the summit."
Lady Matilda turned her gaze on him sharply. "The summit?" She nced at Jessica, remembering their earlier conversation.
Jessica shrugged faintly. "He only just decided. Grandma, I’ll visit you tomorrow morning. His flight leaves in less than four hours."
Lady Matilda nodded but watched them closely as they departed. Alone, she sighed and slowly gathered the photos on her bed.
Her hands shook as she slipped them into a brown envelope and sealed it with trembling fingers.
Meanwhile, back in Jessica’s bedroom, Davis helped her change into something morefortable before they both left the estate.
Their car sped toward Davis’ residence, the night air pressing against the windows. Jessica clung tightly to his arm the entire ride, her heart beating with restless unease.
Davis rubbed her shoulders softly. "Baby, what’s wrong?"
Jessica sighed. She had no ready-made answer to this question but only that she suddenly felt reluctant to let him go.
Call it her mood swing acting up or her instinct warning her, but at this moment she hoped he would change his mind.
With her insistence for him to attend the summit, she couldn’t bring herself to say otherwise at this moment because it only meant contradicting herself.
When the car pulled into the brightly litpound of Davis’ estate, he nced at her profile under the dim lights and sighed deeply.
"Let’s go upstairs," he murmured. She nodded quietly, following him inside.
At intervals, she would nce at Davis’ side profile through the soft light of the staircase as though it was the first time.
Back to their room, Davis gathered a few items he would be needing for the trip; an extraptop, his phone, a few documents that might need his attention.
"I was thinking...since you weren’t attending the summit maybe you could take a look at those documents in the envelope, but then it should be on your return," Jessica said.
Davis nodded as he pulled her into his embrace, a mix of emotions swirling in his mind. "Baby, please can you take good care of yourself while I am away?" He asked.
"I will," Jessica said. "Since you changed your mind, can you go with a peace of mind?"
"Is that a promise?" He pressed.
Jessica shrugged, her eyes twinkling as she took in his facial features.
She had given this a thought, it seems Davis can nag and worry more than any kind of mother.
"I will see you off to the airport," Jessica suggested.
Davis shook his head. "It’ste and with the stress of the day I suggest you go to sleep."
She sighed, giving a quiet nod. She understood she wouldn’t be able to argue her way out.
As Davis made to leave the door, her voice calm and collected as though she had returned to her usual self filtered through, "your new assistant visited the archive and spent three hours."
Davis’ step paused briefly. "Have your men keep watch over him. Inform me if need be."
"Thepany?" She asked.
"You can handle some of the affairs from home and on my return I will see what I can do. And if you must go to thepany, get someone with you."
"I still need some space, you know," Jessicained.
She understood what Davis meant, he would prefer she was always with the guards but then that should be termed breaching her privacy.
"I know but it’s just for a few days before I return, not up to one week."
Jessica nodded. At the moment she had no choice but to ept the arrangements.
Jessica walked him out to the car, after a few minutes of hugging, kissing, andint, Davis boarded the car.
Jessica stood watching as the car left thepound, her eyes reddened.
"Madam, you don’t have to feel sad, he had always gone on business trips and came back before you knew it," Deborah said.
"I know, I was confident of him going for this trip before and hade to ept it he isn’t going. But hearing him mention the trip tonight, I got worried." She tried to exin, not clear if she was informing herself or thedy beside her.
"You don’t have to worry, he will soon be back."
"Are you sure he will be fine?" She asked. "I just feel I should tell him not to leave."
"Are you worried he would be harmed?" Deborah asked.
She nodded and shook her head at the same time. Deborah smiled lightly.
"You aren’t even sure at the moment, take a deep breath and follow your heart."
Jessica nodded, casting one final nce at the gate, she shook her head and returned inside.
Elsewhere ~
Inside a dimly lit club, neon lights spun aroundzily, casting shadows across a corner booth. A young man sat before a cluttered table—empty bottles, scattered files, and documents sprawled open. His gaze was cold, sharp, focused.
"It seems I need to dig deeper into the Louis family," he muttered. "Something about them reeks of filth."
He flipped through another stack of papers. "Their hands have been buried in the Allen fortune longer than anyone realized."
With a pen, he traced links across pages, circling some, marking others with asterisks. The pile of questionable records grew by the hour.
As his frown deepened, a knock rapped on the door. "Come in," he said without lifting his gaze.
A boy in his early twenties entered nervously.
"Why are you here?" the man asked coolly.
"Brother... what’s going on? You infiltrated the Allen Group as an assistant, and left your..."
The man raised a hand, silencing him. "This isn’t something you need to burden yourself with. I Just hope you live well."
"Live well? And what about you?" the younger boy snapped.
"About me?" The man gave a humorless chuckle. "We’ll talk about me another day."
Before the boy could argue further, another knock came. A subordinate entered quickly.
The man’s eyes snapped up, cold and piercing. "What is it?"
"Davis Allen just left the country."
