Chapter 570: What’s Your Secret??

His voice carried a quiet warmth. "It’s alright to bend a few rules. It’s not as if she would poison me."
Nnenna smiled faintly and moved to help him into his chair before taking the seat across from him.
Nanny, however, was not finished. She turned toward Nnenna, her tone respectful but firm. "Princess, I know you care deeply for your brother, and you must also know that we all do. Long before you arrived, we’ve been tending to His Highness with everything in us. But if youe in and undo the order we’ve built, it could cause harm instead of help. For the sake of your love for your brother, I ask that you follow the rules as they are, so things can continue as smoothly as they have before."
Hmm
Nnenna sighed, a faint guilt tugging at her. Staying close to Carl would make her investigation easier, but these protocols had been protecting him for years.
Thest thing she wanted was for anyone to think she couldn’t follow the rules. After all, just because Carl gave her a title didn’t mean she had earned everyone’s respect yet.
"I’ll follow the rules," she finally said.
Carl blinked at her, surprise flickering across his face. He had to nce twice just to be sure this was the same stubborn, ’I’ll do whatever I want’ Nnenna he knew. "You don’t have to," he said softly. "I don’t mind."
"No, I want to. It’s necessary for your safety, so I’ll follow the rules."
Before she could waver, she rose to her feet. "Make sure you eat well and rest. I’ll have my dinner downstairs." And with determined steps, she left the room before doubt could chase her back.
Carl’s eyes followed her until she disappeared. A faint smile tugged at his lips. Then, turning to Nanny, he asked half joking, half serious, "Do you have some kind of miracle in your voice? She barely ever listens to me like that. What’s your secret?"
Nanny chuckled, ughter bubbling out of her like it had been waiting all day. "Nothing, Your Highness. That’s just her caring about you. She obeyed because of that."
Carl leaned back, thoughtful. "I suppose so," he murmured. Then his tone softened, wistful. "Still... it would’ve been nice to have somepany. I was hoping now that she’s here, things might be more fun."
"You two can have fun when you recover," Nannyforted gently before slipping out, leaving Carl in peace to eat.
Meanwhile, Nnenna walked back toward her room, her appetite gone despite how hungry she had been earlier. All these rules, all these protocols, they were suffocating. Annoying, even. But since she had promised to be on her best behavior, it was better to keep her word.
"Your Highness," a voice called from behind.
She turned and saw the housekeeper hurrying toward her. "Your dinner is ready. I heard you couldn’t eat together with your brother... I’m sorry about that. It’s just the way things are here. But it’s also my duty to make sure you are well fed. Please, this way." His expression carried a pleading sincerity.
Nnenna hesitated for a few seconds before nodding. He wasn’t trying to make things difficult; he only wanted her cared for. So she followed him downstairs.
When she sat at the long dining table, she naturally chose the main seat again, earning another ripple of disapproving looks from some servants. The housekeeper, though clearly aware, kept his reaction muted and restrained.
Soon, the table was filled with dishes, every single one of them her favorites. Nnenna blinked, surprised, but the heavy mood still pressed on her, and she only managed to eat a little before setting her spoon down.
The housekeeper sighed quietly and motioned for the servants to clear the table. "So much food wasted..." he murmured.
"Then don’t make so much next time," Nnenna replied frankly, turning to him. "Just prepare something simple that I can finish. No need to serve a feast, I couldn’t possibly eat it all even if I was starving."
The housekeeper dipped his head respectfully. "Yes, Your Highness."
"It’s gettingte, I’ll go back to my room now," Nnenna said, ncing out therge windows.
"Wait," the steward stopped her. "There’s something else. His Highness wanted you introduced to some people. I made sure you ate first because I knew he would worry if you hadn’t."
"Who are those people?" Nnenna asked, curious.
The steward pped his hands softly, and a mixture of men and women walked in.
"As you already know, I’m the steward, and my wife is the housekeeper, though everyone calls her Nanny." He gestured as he spoke. "This is the head of security, Daniel."
Daniel gave a slight bow. "Your Highness," he said slowly, but it was clear to anyone paying attention that there was no real respect in his voice.
The steward continued, "That’s the assistant head of security, Elin. Over there is our head chef, Chef Oliver. And this is Alice, our household doctor. His Highness is the best doctor we know, of course, but since we cannot expect him to treat every small matter, Alice is here should you ever need medical attention."
Alice gave Nnenna a curt nod, cold, not even bothering to bow.
The introductions dragged on for several more minutes.
By the end, every head of something in the castle had been presented. Not one of them seemed to have even a trace of respect for Nnenna, though they kept it subtle. A few bowed, but she could tell it was because of who stood behind her. Carl.
Nnenna scanned them one by one, not bothering to acknowledge their half baked nods and bows. She couldn’t care less whether they epted her or not. What mattered was reading their faces.
These were the heads of their departments, the people closest to Carl. If anyone was poisoning him, it had to be among them.
But who?
Each had stood by him through thick and thin.
