After dinner, Alpha Zander and Lance headed into the study. The soundproofing barrier went up the moment the door clicked shut.
Adide tried to follow them in, but Zander ced a heavy hand on her shoulder, blocking her path.
“I have some things I need to say to Lance in private.”
Adide puckered her lips but eventually turned away, heading toward the front courtyard where Prune and Craig were still lingering.
During dinner, Klein had officially announced his return to the Shadow Peaks. He wasn’t just leaving on his own, either; he had ordered Prune and Craig to get out and head back with him immediately.
Craig had taken the brunt of the scolding–Kleinined that ever since they arrived <i>at </i>the ckthorn estate, a swarm of noble wolves had been dropping by just to admire his paintings.
Klein worried that Craig bing too cozy with high–ranking officials in the capital would only bring unnecessary heat to Lance.
Prune couldn’t help but grumble privately. Sheined that Klein only kept them around when he needed them to fix messes in the shadows, only to kick them out the second the mission was over.
“Are you guys really leaving?” Adide asked, leaning dejectedly against Prune’s shoulder.
“We don’t exactly have a choice.” Prune reached up and ruffled Adide’s hair with her ws.
“Who dares to defy Klein’s orders? Besides, we don’t belong here. If we stay too long, the Marshals will start poking around, and we’ll just cause trouble for you<i>.</i><i>” </i>
“I don’t see it as trouble,” Adide muttered. “I like having you guys around. Let’s just let Klein go back by himself.”
Prune burst outughing. “Don’t let him hear that. His ears are too sharp for his own good-

Adide tucked a stray hair behind her ear.
“In ckthorn, he wouldn’t dare punish me.”

Craig chuckled from the side. “She’s right. Ever since he moved in here, he hasn’t lost his temper with you once.”
The three of them joked about Klein’s tyranny, but they all knew the truth: Klein carried a massive weight on his shoulders and had been run ragged managing the group and the recent chaos. He needed to go home and get some real rest.
The next morning, Adide stood at the territory gates, watching the carriage carrying Klein, Craig, and Prune vanish down the road leading out of the capital.
Zander and Lisa weren’t in a rush to head back to the Bloodscar border; they nned <i>to </i>stay an extra day or two.
Zander truly missed Melinda, and part of him was waiting to see if his spineless daughter, Luna Skye, would find the courage to see her father onest time.

know what happened? Your father ran away! He left us and bolted! He took every gold coin, every scrap of precious ore… he doesn’t want me anymore! He actually abandoned his Luna!”
Melinda froze in her tracks, her voice a low whisper.
“Mom… what do you mean he ran?”
