Third Person’s POV

Ulrik grit his teeth, his own voice sounding dry and hollow to his ears. “Just tell me what you need, Alpha Lance. I’ll do whatever it takes.”

Lance stared him down, letting the silence stretch for a few beats before speaking.

“Go to Velda. Find out exactly who from the Western Tribe was in contact with Tina Barker. As for how to get her to talk… you’re her mate. You know her better than anyone.”

Ulrik went quiet, then stood up and gave a respectful bow. “Understood.”

Since this involved the survival of his entire pack, he had no reason to refuse.

Even if he couldn’t crack Velda, at least he could prove to Lycan Erasmus that he wasn’t part of any treasonous plot. This was his only ticket out of a prison cell.

    Inside the Dungeon.

Velda heard footsteps approaching, followed by the familiar scent of Ulrik’s pheromones. In this hole filled with the stench of mold, rotting straw, and captivity, his scent stood out like fresh air. Her wolf perked up, instantly on guard.

“We’re both prisoners–how is he walking around freely down here?” she wondered. Something felt off.

But she wasn’t truly worried. She knew Ulrik too well; the man couldn’t hide a secret to save his life. Once he got closer, she’d be able to sniff out the truth in a heartbeat.

Ulrik stopped in front of her cell and sat down on a damp, foul–smelling straw mat across from the bars.

He looked at her, taking in her appearance.

Her hair was a matted disaster. Red, angry welts covered her face and neck–some scratched raw, scabbing over only to be ripped open again.

The stench of the dungeon had buried her usually sweet, inviting scent.

A sharp pang of pity shot through him. His eyes softened, and he instinctively let out a wave of soothing pheromones to wrap around her.

Velda’s wolf rxed into his scent, her guard slowly dropping.

“Did they send you?” she asked.

“No,” Ulrik shook his head. “Lycan Erasmus showed me mercy. I begged Lucas for onest visit. I’m being

    released tomorrow.”

Velda stared at him, trying to read his eyes for any sign of a lie.

“The negotiations are over? You got your rank back?”

Ulrik looked down, his face a mask of disappointment.

“Not yet. But Lycan Erasmus is letting me go back to the estate to… reflect on my actions.”

Velda watched him closely for a few more seconds before finally believing him. Her voice softened.

“If you’re getting out, don’t you dare forget what I told you to do.”

Ulrik shot a nervous nce toward the door.

It wasn’t an act–he’d been through so muchtely that his nerves were legitimately shot.

That flicker of cowardice made Velda trust him even more.

This was the same old Ulrik; he wore his heart on his sleeve and couldn’t keep a secret if his life depended on it.

Ulrik leaned in, his voice barely a whisper and his eyes shifting away.

“I’ve been thinking about what you said. The odds are way too low. You haven’t even exined how you’re so sure the Western Tribe will take Alpha Zander. I can’t bet my life on the ckthorns showing up to rescue him. It’s too big a risk.”

He felt a genuine surge of guilt. He was, after all, betraying her.

    But as

the Alpha of the Bloodmoons, he had hundreds of lives on his shoulders. He didn’t have a choice.

    Velda frowned.

“I told you, they will take Zander. Why are you stressing about the details? Just do what I told you once you’re out.”

    Ulrik made a face.

“Easy for you to say. How am I supposed to rescue you alone? I’d have to hire mercenaries, and I’m not spending that kind of money without a guarantee. You know what our bank ount looks like right now.”

Velda rolled her eyes, her voice rising.

“Have you gone stupid in here? You can’t just hire random/sell–swords for a secret op like this! All you have to do is wait for the ckthorns to jump the transport to save Zander. In the chaos, you grab me and we vanish.”

Ulrik looked at her, his expression hardening.

“I’m sorry, but I can’t show my face there. I have to think about the pack’s future. I’m not throwing everything away for a gamble.”

Velda’s face twisted. Her aura red, hitting Ulrik like a tidal wave of rage.

“You! How can you be so cold–blooded?!”

    Ulrik didn’t flinch.

“Lycan Erasmus finally gave me a pass. If I get caught trying to break you out, I’m a dead man, and the whole pack goes down with me. This is all I can do. If that’s not enough, then I’m out.”

Velda let out a harshugh, her aura turning sharp and lethal.

“You’re my mate! It’s your job to take care of me! And you’re giving me ‘logic‘ instead of saving my life? Where’s your Alpha pride? You’re nothing but a pathetic coward!”

    Ulrik’s face went dark.

“Talk to me like that again, and I’m leaving right now.”
