Third Person’s POV
Russell choked back a sob.

“Father, that’s not what we meant… It’s just that someone has to answer for those hundreds of lives lost in Snowdeer Town. A blood debt like that needs a fall guy. Why shouldn’t it be me? I was the one who failed to keep a leash on that psycho. It should be my cross to bear.”
Alpha Zander shook his head. He had always lived by the irond werewolf code of “bleed, don’t cry,” but in this moment, he let out a heavy sigh.
“This is on me. Every drop of blood spilled in Snowdeer Town is on my hands. It’s my and mine alone.”
“That Velda… she’s such a backstabbing bitch!”
burden,
Lisa, Russell’s mate–a fiery beta who never held back–couldn’t suppress her rage anymore.
“Ulrik and her, they’re both trash!” Tears welled in Lisa’s eyes.
“In all these decades, when has the Alpha ever broken a treaty between our kingdoms? Then Velda shows up and, just to chase some pathetic military glory, she ughters a whole vige! How can someone be that evil? How could she stomach it? I want to haul ass back <i>to </i>the capital right now, rip her throat out, and grind their bones to dust!”
Her mate had lost an arm on that battlefield just to save Ulrik’s life.
Since then, Russell had spent every single day on the training grounds with his one remaining arm, painfully relearning how to fight.
How could they have been so blind? How did they let that “loyal” couple pull the wool over their eyes?
If they had known the truth back then, they never would have let Ulrik and Velday a finger on Adide’s reputation.
At the mention of Adide, Lisa finally broke down. She absolutely adored Adide.
When Adide was born, Lisa happened to be in the capital waiting to give birth herself. She had never seen such a perfect, tiny pup–smelling like sweet milk and soft fur.
Back then, Adide was the darling of the entire pack.

Before Adide turned three, Lisa would drop by Alpha Bentley’s house every few days just to y with her.
Later, she followed Russell to the border.
At first, she’d visit the capital every couple of years. But as her own cubs grew up–needing school and transformation training–and with the border skirmishes picking up, she couldn’t leave her post easily.
Then came the catastrophe where Alpha Bentley and six other high–ranking wolves were killed. She had gone back for the funeral and cried until she copsed.
But by then, Adide had already been shipped off to the Shadow Peaks forbat training. They never got to see each other.
Everything that followed–Adide being abused by the Bloodmoons, the forced mating bond, the rejection–they only found out about it when it was already over.
When Adide finally made it back to the Frostfangs, they had been ready to go scorched earth to help her.
But soon after, they heard she’d already headed to the Southern Border. Then came her medals, her return, and her mating with the prestigious Alpha Lance.
And now, because of this mess at Snowdeer Town, her own family from the border was going to drag her back into the mud.
Lisa’s heart broke thinking about Adide having to navigate the shark–infested waters of capital politics again.
“How did she even survive all that?”
As Lisa sobbed, the other she–wolves at the table were swept up in the grief, and low whimpers filled the room. The air was thick with a mix of sorrow and raw resentment.
Lisa wiped her face aggressively and stood up, her eyes shing with resolve.
“Alpha Zander! I’m going back with you! Even if I can’t take the fall, I need to see Adide. I need to look that Lance guy in the eye and tell him if he ever messes with her, I’ll rip his throat out myself!”
Alpha Zander sighed. He knew her love for Adide was real.
“If you want to go… fine,” Zander said slowly. “Go see her. Stay a few days and thene back. But you aren’ting with me tomorrow. Start your journey a few dayster.”

The reality was simple: he was going back to the capital as a prisoner under guard.
The fact that Lycan Erasmus kept Jefferson inmand meant he didn’t want the Snowdeer Town scandal to wipe out the rest of the Doyle family.
But even so… it was still going to fall on Adide’s shoulders.
Over the past year, every secret letter between him and Alpha Lance had been about how to handle this fallout.
Alpha Zander felt a bitter sting in his chest.
When Adide was being bullied and broken, he was thousands of miles away, pletely useless.
Now that she finally had her feet under her, she was being dragged down by his mistakes.
He felt a deep sense of powerlessness.
He stood up, and though his frame was still massive and imposing, he looked older, more worn down.
“It’s settled. No more talking.”
“After I leave, keep up the training and patrols as usual. But listen: even if the Western Tribe starts acting up at the border, stay frosty. Unless they actually cross the line, keep your cool.”
“Do not start a war right now. Whatever happens, stick to the code: no harming civilians. That is the bottom line!”
“Yes, Alpha Zander!”
The soldiers answered in unison. Their voices were loud, but they were heavy with grief.
Alpha Zander waved them off and went to his room.
He sat alone in the dark, not bothering to turn on the light.
Once, the alliance with Alpha Bentley’s family had been his greatest pride.
Even after Alpha Bentleys were gone, seeing Ulrik step up to help at the border had made him feel like the legacy was in good hands.
He thought he was watching the next generation show their grit.
