The execution site was not a ce for the faint of heart, and children were strictly forbidden- though no parent would have brought them anyway.

Yet, the world is never short on people who crave a spectacle, and Hunt’s status as a “Princess’s mate” drew a huge crowd.

After all, seeing someone so highly ced face execution was a rare event.

This specific execution ground was usually busy in December when most death sentences were carried out.

Around ten in the morning, Ellen arrived with the Capital Guard to establish order. They cordoned off the area with ropes, forcing the crowd back behind the boundary.

Hunt was still at the Ministry of Justice, yet to be transported to the site.

As was customary, the Ministry of Justice prepared avishst meal for the condemned.

Hunt managed to hold himself together at first, but when the food was served, he began to tremble uncontrobly, unable to eat or speak.

Ron, a Ministry of Justice official, personally came to see him off. “Have something to eat,” Ron urged.

The words had the opposite effect. Hunt was so terrified he immediately urinated himself.

He shakily picked up his fork, then dropped it instantly. He looked up at Ron, his voice quavering. “Did… did anyone from the Shumans–my former Spectrehowl Packe to see me?”

Ron answered, “The Shumans no longer exists. However, we did inform them they could visit you onest time, but they said you were guilty of heinous crimes and declined to see you.”

Hunt covered his face with his hands and began to sob uncontrobly.

Seeing his breakdown, Ron pressed on. “Do you have anything you want to confess? If you can identify the mastermind behind the treason case, I can ask for clemency and potentially spare your life.”

Ron didn’t want to miss thisst opportunity.

Hunt knew a lot of internal information, but he hadn’t cracked, even under torture–clearly to protect the Shumans.

Now that the Shumans had abandoned him, Ron hoped it would break his will.

Hunt stopped crying. Under the mixed terror and rage, he wavered for a moment.

But his ingrained habit of protecting the Shumans was too deep. Their refusal to see him was actually the best oue, as itpletely distanced them from his guilt.

He picked up the fork again and slowly began to eat.

His hands shook so violently he could barely hold the fork, but he meticulously picked up pieces of meat and put them in his mouth.

Seeing this, Ron knew Hunt wouldn’t confess, but he tried onest time. “Just confess, and Lance can plead with Lycan Erasmus. Not only could your execution be revoked, but the Shumans could also be spared.”

“Impossible.” Hunt looked up, forcing a miserableugh. “It’s impossible because I don’t know anything.”

He had to pretend he waspletely ignorant.

If he admitted knowing anything, he would be convicted as a co–conspirator in treason. Not only would he be dead, but the entire Shuman family would be implicated.

Since he was a dead man walking, why drag his entire family down to hell with him?

Ron gave up trying to persuade him but didn’t rush him. There was still plenty of time.

Tears sshed into his bowl. Hunt forcefully inhaled, trying to suppress his crying and push down the terror of death, but the deep–seated fear had consumed his heart.

He began to ramble. “None of this was my choice. If I could do it again, I would never have married the Princess. Even if the Spectrehowl Pack declined, it was still the Spectrehowl Pack. Its foundation was there, and it wouldn’t have be destitute.”

“After college, I could have continued my studies and advanced my career. Mating the Princess wasn’t the only path. How could I have been so foolish? So utterly foolish! I could have had a great future, mated a gentle, virtuous she–wolf, and strengthened the family through a proper alliance. I thought I was taking a shortcut, but it turned out to be a dead end.”

The fork slipped from his hand again, and his shoulders shook with sobs.

Ron picked up the fork for him. “Regret is useless now. Taking action is what matters. You can tell us everything you know. There might still be a chance. If you don’t speak, death is truly your only path.”

Hunt covered his face and wept for a while, then lowered his hands, wiping away the tears and snot with his sleeve.

The previous torture had made his movements slow and clumsy.

He hunched over and said, “No matter what, I’m already on a dead–end road. I have no chance.”

Ron had worked in the justice system for years and had seen all manner of criminals.

Most, when facing death, regretted their actions and confessed everything for a slight chance at life.

But Hunt didn’t seem like the most vicious type of viin, yet he possessed a fiercely clear mind.

Even now, facing execution, he was calmly weighing his options.

Given his intelligence andposure, how could he have failed to escape Madison’s maniptions in the first ce?
