No matter how much she hated to admit it, Larry was her father, and admitting something like this to him was nothing like confessing to anyone else.
But in those few seconds of silence, Larry''s face twisted with fury. He suddenly shouted, "Whose child are you carrying? How could you do something so disgraceful?"
"Youe from an esteemed family, you graduated from a top university-how could you possibly end up pregnant before marriage? Amara, you have truly disappointed me!"
As Larry spoke, Fiona and Elowen came downstairs, both wearing mocking expressions as they looked at Amara. Fiona chimed in, "Exactly, Amara. You''re supposed to be a properdy from a well-off family. How could you do something as shocking as getting pregnant before marriage?"
The irony of Fiona saying this-especially after just a few days ago, when she was on her knees, sobbing out apologies to Amara-was almostughable. Amara snapped, "Shut up."
How could Fiona, of all people, have the nerve to use her of impropriety? How could she even say such things?
"What do you think you''re doing? You''re the one who made this mistake, and now you''re talking back to your stepmother? Hurry up and tell me: whose child are you carrying?" Larry''s face was flushed bright red, clearly on the verge of losing control from sheer anger.
Over the years, Amara had seen Larry lose his temper a few times, but never like this. It was obvious that her actions had pushed him far beyond his limit.
Amara closed her eyes and said, "Dad, I can''t say."
What did she mean, she couldn''t say? Was she trying to protect that man?
Larry was trembling with rage, about to explode at her again, when suddenly he clutched his chest in pain and copsed onto the sofa, his whole body shaking.
The sight startled everyone. The household staff rushed over, struggling to help Larry up.
Elowen, who had been silent until now, screamed, "You made Dad sick! You are so shameless, so disgusting!" Fiona had already rushed over to help the staff support Larry.
Thankfully, it turned out there was no serious problem-Larry was simply overwhelmed by anger. The staff quickly brought his heart medication helped him take a pill, patted his back, and gave him a sip fwater.
He gradually recovered, though he leaned weakly against the sofa, his face still pale and drawn.
Through it all, Amara simply stood by, watching in silence. When Larry first copsed, she felt a brief sh of panic and her fists clenched unconsciously, but she didn''t rush forward to help with the others.
She just waited quietly. When Larry finally regained hisposure, he looked up at her with a cold, sharp re and scolded, "You''re so ungrateful!"
Amara hadn''t even responded
before Elowen began to gloat. She had once been Larry''s favorite daughter,
but over the past year
he''d suddenly started treating Amara well and growing cold toward her a change that stung.
Now, with Amara at the center of such a scandal and Larry openly scolding her in front of everyone, Elowen was thrilled. Pointing at Amara, she taunted, "Did you hear
that you''re a really are
daughter who makes
Dad ashamed. You
shameless and pathetic you''re the
disgrace of this family!"
