The next day, Chasel came alone to Evadne''s vi to see the couple.


    "Chasel, where''s my brother?"


    Evadne greeted him as they settled into the cozy living room, while Thaddeus came in with a te of freshly cut fruit slices, ying the perfect host.


    "Cassius is back home looking after Dad and packing up; we''re heading back to M Country in a couple of days."


    Chasel''s use of "Dad" sounded so smooth and natural, a soft tenderness twinkling


    in his eyes.


    Evadne watched him intently, her mind racing back to a hidden photograph her brother had once stashed away. She wondered if it had been destroyed by now, and she still felt uneasy about it.


    "Evadne, I came here because the results from the drug analysis are in," Chasel said, his tone serious as he handed over the documents.


    Evadne eagerly tore open the brown paper envelope, with Thaddeus leaning in close beside her.


    "This is quite aplex mixture," she murmured, her experience as a surgeon giving her only a superficial understanding.


    Thaddeus found it even difficult. "Is this really medicine, not some illicit drug?"


    "It''s medicine. I''ve checked theponents. It''s mostly antidepressants and antipsychotics, used to control psychiatric symptoms," Chasel exined with a grave expression.


    Thaddeus frowned deeply. "If it''s legitimately medicine, even if we catch Avery red-handed, he could still find a way to wriggle out of it. The penalties for drug trafficking and distributing unauthorized medicine are worlds apart."


    "Using living people as test subjects is truly cruel and sinister!" Evadne clenched her fists, her anger palpable as if she was squeezing the life out of an imaginary foe.


    "But there''s something unexpected here."


    Chasel reLioneled, picking up the report again and scrutinizing it. His brows furrowed tightly. "Theposition of this drug closely resembles a treatment for Alzheimer''s that the Bright Group has been developing recently. To exaggerate a bit, just by looking at these results, you''d think it was a generic version produced by our group!"


    "Alzheimer''s?"


    Thaddeus'' handsome face revealed surprise. "I heard that''s incurable, and there''s no effective medication."


    Chasel nodded. "Exactly, and that''s why the Bright Group is somitted to developing a breakthrough drug. Over the years, my father, Zachary, has pulled together top national talent in drug research, pouring virtually all of thepany''s resources into it. There have been rumors of progress, but I''m skeptical. It''s not that easy. Releasing such information might just be a ploy to attract more investors. Academic papers can be falsified, after all!"


    Evadne''s eyes suddenly brightened. "Avery''s mother, she''s got Alzheimer''s."


    "He might be driven to such extreme measures for his own mother," Thaddeus connected the dots, voicing her thoughts.


    "But it''s strange, the Chambers Group never announced a pharmaceutical division, and they don''t seem to own any drugpanies."


    The more Evadne thought about it, the more suspicious she was. "Avery suddenly emerging to develop this drug and conducting experiments in secret. Although he''s vile, he doesn''t seem like the kind of person who could n such a crime; this doesn''t seem like his field of expertise."


    Thaddeus'' hand found its way to her waist, gently soothing. "Evadne, so you think someone else is pulling the strings? It''s not really Avery wanting to develop this drug; he''s just a pawn?"


    "It''s hard not to think that way. After all, he''s been lurking around Helgen for years, who knows what kind of connections he''s made."


    "But we have no evidence," Chasel said, frustrated and helpless. "You have no evidence that those so-called ''addicts'' are human test subjects, nor any evidence to prove Avery''s involvement. What can we do?"


    Mr. and Mrs. Abernathy exchanged a worried nce, both lost in thought.


    Just then, Evadne''s phone rang.


    It was Aaron.


    She quickly answered, "Aaron, what''s up?"


    "Evadne, something''s happened!"


    Aaron sounded extremely agitated. "Just now, Lionel from S-Star Group, you know, Aviana''s dad''s godson, was arrested by the police on suspicion of murder!"
