?Chapter 2806:
“Mr. Scott, Miss Pearson.” The other teacher offered a reassuring smile.
“Don’t worry. We’re aware of Joyce’s situation, and we’ll take good care of her. It’s best if you go now.”
She added gently, “The more you linger, the harder it will be for her to adjust.”
“Yes, you’re right.” Hadley nodded, persuaded by her words.
Her daughter had grown, regained her health, and was finally taking this brave new step in life. She should be proud of her little girl.
Hadley said softly, “We’ll leave it in your hands. Thank you for your efforts.”
Eric nodded in agreement.
“We truly appreciate everything you’ve done. Please, look after them well.”
“It’s no trouble at all. This is our responsibility. Please, take care on your way.” The teacher smiled warmly.
Hadley turned back several times, her steps reluctant as she slowly walked away.
Once seated in the car, she lifted a hand to shield her damp eyes.
“Here,” Eric said, pulling out a tissue and offering it to her.
“Thank you.”
“Don’t be upset, and try not to worry too much. With Locke around, Joy will be fine. In fact, she’s managed wonderfully so far.”
At least, she hadn’t cried or refused to step into the ssroom.
“I’m not sad, and I’m not anxious,” Hadley murmured as she dabbed at her tears, her reddened eyes betraying her.
“I’m actually happy.” Her lips curved into a faint smile.
“My Joy is just like the other children now…”
A year ago, she wouldn’t even have dared to dream of this moment.
Tears welled up again and traced down her cheeks.
“Don’t cry,” Eric said instinctively, his hand brushing the corner of her eye to wipe them away.

And then he froze.
Should he have done that?
Their gazes met—brief, awkward, uncertain—before Hadley turned her face away and Eric quickly withdrew his hand.
As parents, Eric and Hadley couldn’t help feeling tense about Joy’s first days at school, their minds never truly at ease. But in truth, Joy adapted surprisingly well.
Other than clinging to Hadley a little on that very first day, she settled in without much trouble.
Of course, much of the credit went to Locke.
“There are so many kids I don’t know,” Joy reported cheerfullyter that day, “but I have Locke!”
Naturally, Eric wanted to thank his nephew. He said, “Locke, I really appreciate what you’ve done. Tell me—what would you like? I’ll buy you any toys you want.”
“Thank you, Uncle Eric, but I’m good,” Locke replied, shaking his small head with solemn seriousness.
“I’m older than Joy. Looking after her is my duty.”
“I see…” Eric nced at Ernest. Locke’s earnest little face was almost a perfect mirror of his father’s.
“Very well.” Eric nodded.
“I’ll keep that in mind. In the future, if there’s ever something you want, just let me know.”
