?Chapter 2722:
Hadley kept the question to herself, though July was quick to exin.
“Ellis is about to be reassigned. I came ahead of time to start packing his belongings.”
Reassigned? Hadley was caught off guard. Ellis’ career wasn’t her business, yet she couldn’t ignore the fact that he was still responsible for Eric’s case.
“Is Mr. Gomez moving up in rank?” she asked.
“Yes!” July’s face brightened as she leaned closer, her voice lowered.
“The announcement isn’t public yet, but it’s more or less confirmed.”
She continued with a touch of pride.
“He’ll be stepping into a higher role, and after that, we’re hoping he’ll be returning to Lunville.”
At this point, July gave Hadley a sidelong nce.
In the beginning, she and her husband had fretted over their youngest son living alone in another city, longing for him toe back.
However, with how things had unfolded, July no longer felt the same urgency.
If her son truly earned the promotion but had to remain in Srixby for a little longer, July secretly hoped he might return home with a wife in tow when he did.
Hadley, on the other hand, felt her thoughts spinning. What would happen to Eric?
If Ellis was promoted and transferred, surely another officer would be assigned to the case.
“Mom.” At that moment, Ellis came down the stairs.
When his eyes met Hadley’s, he gave a polite nod, then gathered the books from her hands and set them neatly back inside the box.
Turning to his mother, he reminded her, “I told you already, I can manage the packing myself. And I’m not leaving right away, so there’s no need to hurry.”
“No need to hurry? Your father already said the promotion is certain!” July’s lips curved into a knowing smile.
Her tone grew brighter.

“The transfer notice should arrive within the next few days.”
Then she sighed with mock reproach.
“You’re still single and on your own. If I don’t take care of these small things, who will?” Her eyes drifted back to Hadley once more.
“Mom!” Ellis flushed, uneasy that Hadley might be offended.
“Alright then, if you want to fuss over it, go ahead.”
“Leave these books here for now,” July said, patting the box.
“I’ll head upstairs to put things in order.”
“Okay…” Ellis gave in, unable to stop her.
After his mother left, he stole a careful look at Hadley, worried she might have taken offense.
The memory of hisst effort to rify, which had upset her, held him back.
He paused, caught between exining himself or keeping quiet.
“Mr. Gomez.” The sound of Hadley’s voice startled him—she had spoken first.
“Yes?” He blinked in surprise, uncertain if something was wrong.
Remembering what July had said, Hadley felt her voice grow uneasy.
“So it’s true? You’re being transferred?”
“Well…” Ellis hesitated, but then admitted honestly, “Yes. The change will likely happen in a few days.”
